If you have cathedral/vaulted ceilings...
What kind of lighting do you have? We're putting on an addition and DH doesn't want to use high-hats (which we have in our current LR). We were looking at cable lighting, but I'm not sure if I love the look (very modern).

Cable lighting? So 1990's... High Hats or what we call Recess Lighting I think is the best.

Yeah the only reason he doesn't want to use them is because you can't insulate behind them.

We have Hi-Hats. You need to buy IC Hi-Hats so you can insulate around them.

We have hi-hats...
If your DH doesn't want hi-hats - you can stick with no overhead lighting at all... some electric sconces and lots of lamps. It will also make the room more cozy.
edit for grammar

Re: If you have cathedral/vaulted ceilings...
We have no overhead lighting, but lots of tall windows so it's pretty bright in there during the day, and standing lamps for brightness at night.
