master baths with cathedral ceilings?

Anyone have one or anyone have any pics?

We are in the middle of dormering our house (I'll post pics when we're done) and we've decided on cathedral ceilings in the master bath.

My DH is arguing with me about lighting... I'd love some ideas for lighting in baths with cathedral ceilings!

Re: master baths with cathedral ceilings?

our master bath has one. It was like that when we bought, I don't really like it. The bathroom never gets really warm because it only has a small piece of baseboard heat & it all goes up in the high ceiling.
We just have a vanity light & we added a candle chandelier over the jacuzzi tub because there is a skylight there & no place to run electric.
When we renovate the bath in the near future we are getting rid of the cathedral ceiling.

Re: master baths with cathedral ceilings?

I too hate my cathedral ceilings in my master bath. We didn't put them in they were there when we bought. I dislike them for the same reasons the prior poster mentioned. In addition, I believe they cause dust, I have 3 other bathrooms in my house and they are dust free. My master requires constant dusting which drives me crazy. Anyway, for lighting we have two fixtures over each sink and sconces over the bath tub walls. In addition, we have two skylights, so the one good thing I can say is that lighting is never a problem.

Re: master baths with cathedral ceilings?

I love the cathedrial ceiling in the bathroom. it makes the room seem so much bigger. We put a big skylight over the tub/shower that lets in so much natural light. We have a bar with lights above our mirror, and we also have a shelf up hight with lights on a dimmer.
This pic is sideways but you get the idea - skylight and shelf with mood lighting

I love the cath ceilings in my MB, makes the room seem so much bigger.
We have sconces on either side above the vanity, and a crystal chandelier abv the jacuzzi, and some recessed lights as well. I dont have a picture to post though, sorry!

I suggested a chandelier above the jacuzzi and sconces by the vanity. DH wants recessed lights over the shower. Is this similar to your set up? I thought having recessed lights over just the shower might look odd....

Yes I have 1 recessed light over the shower, and 4 other recessed lights on the ceiling. I dont think just 1 recessed light would look wrong, your DH might be concerned that maybe there wont be enough light-but I guess that can be adjusted by the wattage of the bulbs.

Re: master baths with cathedral ceilings?

If you are considering a hanging light above a tub, check with your town. I was told it's against code to have one. Chat Icon It was my plan to have a small chandelier over the tub - it might be something we'll have to do after everything is finished...

I wanted to do one above my new jacuzzi but I was told by code it had to be I think 8 ft above the top of the tub so no chandelier for me.

We were worried about the heat issue as well, but have not had any problems, it's quite toasty (we have radiant heat, and love it because the tiles are nice and warm).

we have a large master with a catherdrial ceiling. First it's always freezing in there and we have forced heat. We have seperate vanities and sink. Over each is lighting , then we have a light over the shower and a celieing light fan over the soaking tub.

Thanks ladies.... I have to check with the town about the chandelier. I guess we'll go with the vanity lights and recessed for now!
