What is your purpose for it?
Different pumps serve different purposes.
I pumped full time for 1 year for my daughter who got BM only. I can help you figure it out if I understand your needs.
The first few weeks you should have a rental pump. If you have any supply issues you will need a rental pump just to help you get over the supply issues.

I think it really depends on what kind of pump you rent and what your purpose is for it. I was pumping exclusively for 5 months and rented a Medela Classic, which is a hospital grade pump. It was recommended to me that I rent one of hospital grade because I was ONLY pumping and my pump would be used so often, and the hospital grade just does a better job. So I rented it for about $35 a month which came out to a total of $175. It would cost over $2k to buy that pump if I wanted it. The other hospital grade pump is the Lactina Select, which still costs over $800 to buy so for me, renting was def. more cost effective. I know there are plenty of women who use the Pump In Style for a long time, but I was just afraid of supply issues. Also, for the amount of time I pumped, it was still cheaper to rent the one I rented than to have bought a PIS. This time, I'm really going to try to go the full year with pumping (will have to work out logistics when I go back to work, which is why I stopped with DD#1) so I may get a PIS when I return because it is more portable than the Medela Classic. You really need to consider your own needs and desires before you choose a pump.

Okay, My mom taught breastfeeding classes most of my life. This is her rec. She says the PIS is the best. Get the double pump.
BUT, coming from her, who is gung-ho breastfeeding, she said, DON'T buy it until you know BFing works for you. She says, you won't really pump for the first few weeks anyway so waiting a few weeks to buy one is the best option. There are so many factors that go into why BFing might not work and 300$ is a lot of money to spend on something that you can't return no matter what.

The problem is... once you buy it.. you can't return it. No matter what. Even if the box is unopened. So buying it, without knowing if you need it.. it's a big waste.

I'll be home with my little  for the first 12 weeks anyway so I guess I'll wait on buying it to see how my supply comes in. After 12 weeks I will be going back to work full time so it sounds like the double eletric pump is the way to go.
It's just so overwhelming!

This is not true. BRU has a 45 day return policy for unopened pumps.

I got the Medela PISA shortly before I was due. I'm glad I got it before b/c DS ended up in the NICU for a few days. The hospital gave me a pump there and then I had to pump right away once we went home. DH was able to sterilize the parts before we were discharged so I could pump when we got home.
The hospital gave me a hand pump (Medela Harmony), which I really hate to use. It takes forever and I found it to be more uncomfortable to pump with it. I've only had to use it when I was away from DS and didn't really have a place where I could use the electric pump.
If you plan on pumping at work, I'd definitely get a double electric pump.
