Who is NOT saving there babys cord blood??
i am soo on the fence with this! DH and I are going to a viacord meeting this sunday to learn more about it and the cost. i guess ill make up my mind

Omg get out where do you get a meeting from .. we are also SOOO UNDECIDED!!! This is a Great question i would love to see what most of the ladies are doing I get Mixed reviews on if we should do it or Not..

We did not with dd#1 and will not with this pregnancy...way too expensive and it is just not something we can afford at this time

Same here. My Ob even said that it's likely more of a worthwhile investment to take that money & sink it into a college fund.

This is what we're doing also, for the same exact reason. There's just no way we can afford it.
this is why we keep going back and forth the money it costs. part of me thinks its a great thing and part of me rather put that $ for baby later in life when he/she use it

I did not with DD, but then felt guilty about it so I did my research again this time around for DS....but based upon real life events, I am choosing not to again.
Without getting into much detail, a very dear friend of mine has a very ill 2 1/2 year old who is on an experimental chemotherapy treatment. As part of his treatment there will be some stem cell's used. His cord blood is banked. However, at the beginning of his treatments the hospital harvested his own stem cells when he was in the hospital. The family was told that it is policy that banked cordblood is only used as an absolute last resort.
So, after doing tons of reading and calling up the major companies to ask my questions, I've decided that for me it is best to based my decision on very unfortunate, but very real events in my life.

See I agree its way TOO MUCH MOney and DH & I cant afford it at all but some people say its Great and some say that if you child has something the cord blood wouldnt even be helpful..

We aren't. We can't afford it right now and based on my research, the chances that you will actually even be able to use the cord blood are pretty slim.

Nope, not gonna do it. I did a lot of research on it - it's helpfulness is REALLY limited, by what kind of illnesses it can treat, and for how long. The chances are just so miniscule that it would serve any real purpose that it didn't outweight the extreme cost.

My gut feeling is that I will be passing on banking the cord blood.
The expense seems extreme.
I hate to say it, but I almost feel like it's a scam. They are praying on all us nervous first time mothers and convincing us to cough up $2k.

Based on what I have read, this is my feeling also. I have to say reading this thread has made me feel better. Because even though I didn't feel the cost was worth the benefit, I was feeling very guilty for not doing it.
