Re: Cheese Sandwich spinoff

come to think of it, I don't remember if there were free lunches for sure.

I brought my lunch most of the time.

When they had pizza I ate the lunch.

JHS the same.

By HS I went out most of the time.

In elementary school - I think I went home for lunch in the 1st & 2nd grade. After that, I brought my own lunch. My school didn't sell lunch - just milk, juice and I think when I was in the 4th grade they got a soda machine.

In HS - I bought or brought lunch. There was no free lunch option that I was aware of.

Free lunch in elementary and JHS (in Brooklyn).

I started working when i was 13 and paid for my own lunch in HS (also- it wasnt public so they didnt offer free lunch).

I selected "other". At my schools in Ohio if you forgot your lunch you were able to get that day's hot lunch. Then your parents had to pay for it at semesters end.

Re: Cheese Sandwich spinoff

I never qualified for assistance.

If I wanted to buy, my mom sent me with money for the week (we paid for "hot lunch" on a weekly basis). Usually, she sent me with lunch. I used to eat tuna sandwiches all the time.

Never qualified for assistance, but usually brought my lunch (a turkey and cheese sandwich with Doritos!). I sometimes brought money for an ice cream or cookies or something.

Brought my lunch - a bologna sandwich - every.fricken.day.

I no longer eat bologna. Chat Icon

Ha! That was me, too. And I don't eat it now either. Chat Icon

Re: Cheese Sandwich spinoff

went to catholic school-always brought lunch.

moved to FL...had my mother fill out a form for our "number"

was told our lunch was freeChat Icon they had no idea how school lunch worked, both my parents went to catholic school.

so there were 7 of us. We loved school lunch and salad bar day.

Then they moved back to NY, back to catholic school and brought lunch.

I believe in FL we also were approved for free breakfast, but never did that...my mother liked to feed us in the AM.

Re: Cheese Sandwich spinoff

Never needed assistance. I think I brought my lunch from home every day. From grade school through high school.

I'm sure I bought at school occassionally.

They did cahrge for school lunch in elementary. you just paid like once a month or something not at the actual lunch line. I guess because kids are still young. However, the areas I lived in brooklyn, almost everyone qualified for free lunch.

I really don't think they did in my school. I worked in the cafeteria in 5th and 6th grade as a lunch helper, and no one ever had those stickers.

granted, I lived in a pretty well off area (Park Slope) and my school was VERY small...about 300-400 students grade K-6 in the whole school.

Paying for lunch was something I never heard of until JHS.

my niece goes to the school now...I'll ask my sister the deal to be sure though.

it could also be something they started after I left...I graduated elementary school in 1986 Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: so yeah, I was totally wrong. apparently kids DID pay for lunch...we just didn't but NO ONE had stickers or vouchers. the teachers collected money in the class room. I just never new what they were doing I guess Chat Icon Chat Icon

I guess the school was so small they didn't have to do that. the lunch ladies knew EVERYONE by name.

LOL, yeah there were no stickers or anything but I would remember the teach gving letter out to the few kids that paid lunch if they didnt pay. I grew up in East New York and Bushwick and alot of us were poor.

My dad was out of work for a bit around 1980, and my mother went back to work but had to be re-educated first in her field. So there was a period where there was no paycheck coming in, and I qualified for free lunches. Before that I brought my lunch generally, but bought on pizza day. After that, I was in high school and lunch was gross--I think I brought.
