Organ Donation Poll

Just curious because I am watching The View and they are discussing it.

How many of you are organ donors?

To answer my own question: I am one.

Re: Organ Donation Poll

Yes I am, for any organ needed.

My dad is a recipient of both a heart and kidney, so I would like to give back in the future.

Re: Organ Donation Poll

I am.
Although DH doesn't like the idea and said he would have a hard time allowing it. So I've also talked to my mother incase I should go before DH she will be sure he respects my wishes.

ETA: I found this on the NYHEALTH website:

Q: I am currently enrolled in the New York State Life Pass it On Registry – should I enroll in the Donate Life Registry? What is the difference?
A: The Life Pass It on Registry was established in 1999 and records someone's intention to be an organ and tissue donor. This is called an intent registry. Intent registries require next of kin's permission for donation to proceed in the event of the prospective donor's death.

In 2006, a new law created the Donate Life Registry: a registry that records an individual's own legal consent to organ, tissue and eye donation upon their death. If you are registered in this new registry, your family will be informed of your decision and given information regarding the donation process, but their permission is not required to proceed with donation.

If you are enrolled in the Life Pass it On intent registry, your enrollment is not automatically included in the Donate Life consent registry. To ensure that your decision to be an organ, tissue and eye donor is honored, you must enroll in the Donate Life Registry.

I am going to make sure I'm registered in the Donate Life Registry.

My aunt's heart was donated to a teenage girl (and they were a rare match) and since then the girl has gone on to college, grad school to help the mentally handicapped and has written letters to my cousins, over time, telling them how her life has changed and how their mom's heart has helped her live a good life etc Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Nicest gift anyone could ask for.

Re: Organ Donation Poll

Yes. One of my best friends received a liver transplant, which saved her life and while I had already checked off to be an organ donor (b/c I always just figured I wouldn't need them and could help someone), this made me truly realize how much good it can do.

Re: Organ Donation Poll

I am. My mom was saved by a teen boy from westchester around christmas of 2005. My mom recieved both his lungs, and 2 other people in the same hospital as my mom were saved as well, 1 got his heart, and someone else recieved his kidneys.

Its such an amazing thing! we wrote the family but they never wrote back. Its the most emotional thing I have ever gone through. Knowing that my mom might not make, and feeling so horrible for the other family, in the days after all I could think about was them, and parying for them so much. I was thinking how hard it must be at this point, they must be planning his funeral, then the next day they were probably burrying him, and I even think and pray for them on the anniversary. Even though its such a joyous time for us, I think about them, and how hard it is, that its another year without him, right before the holidaysChat Icon

My dh knows that I would want it done but there is nothing on my license that indicates it. Do they go just by that?

Re: Organ Donation Poll

I am not, for religious reasons.

My family believes that every part of the body must be buried.

More modern interpretation of the religion says it would be a good deed -- for an immediate transplant to save the life of another human being -- but that organs cannot be donated to a "organ bank"

My family is not modern in their thinking Chat Icon

I am and I was going to check off 'skin' so they can't donate my skin, but decided against it. Let them have everything.

Re: Organ Donation Poll

I have a question. I would love to donate my organs to someone in need after I am done with them. however I must say i don;t like the idea of me laying naked on a tabel with a bunch of med students poking and prodding. I know I would be dead but the thought still bothers me. Is there any way to make sure your organs can be used for people but not for teaching. It may be two different things but I personally have no idea and would love to know. I am even ok with them using my "stuff" for research. Especially since I have a few genetic issues. But the whole dead body on the table being poked I am against. Silly I know.

this may never even be the case, someone might actually get your organs, but I *believe* you can choose for donation only, not Science.

Re: Organ Donation Poll

I am and so is DH -
He knows how strongly I feel about it -

I have been a donor since I got my driver's license -

My parents are NOT happy w/ it, they have this idea that the Doctors won't try as hard to save you if they know you're a donor ........

My theory is, if I'm THAT far gone, I don't want to be saved anyway - Let my soul go whereever it is it's going to go and give whatever body parts can help someone else away .......I don't need that body anymore - and I want to be creamated (sp??) anyway - so who cares if I'm fully in tact or not ?

thanks for the info. I should probably look up my state to see what their laws are. I would like to make sure that my organs would help someone out. I do have an irrational fear though. I am afraid if people know before hand that i am an organ donor they won't work as hard to save my life. I know it's irrational and Dr's do an amazing job at saving lives but I am a little ocd (maybe a brain transplant would help me in that dept). But yeah back to the point, I should really see what the laws are here.
