How long should I tell my obgyn we've been TTC - Update

I see her tonight for a routine checkup and obviously want to talk about TTC.

This is our 6th cycle.

Would you be honest and tell her just that?
Up it by a few months? I almost feel like if I do that I'm jinxing it - but I do recall people doing that.

WWYD?

Update - well I just got back from my appt with Dr. Hanauer and I just love her so much! She basically said she doesn't think I should do more testing just yet - but if I wanted to I could. I told her I wanted to wait until we hit the 9 month mark - and she said that was fine. She would start with an HSG since she doesn't think we need to test my DH's sperm since he did get me pregnant the first time.

I hope it doesn't come to that but I'd rather be proactive and take some action. I may not be able to wait the full three months knowing me - so I'll hold out as long as I can.

Thanks for listening! Chat Icon

Well I mean, how concerned are you?

What outcomes are you hoping for? Do you want testing done?

Funny - cause I had an appt tonight (but I cancelled mine - didn't feel like dealing) but anyway - I think I would tell him/her that you have been 'offically' trying for 6 months and then a couple of months of 'whatever'

I would tell him/her that you are really concerned, cause you are doing all that you can do and want to know what the next step is

I'm not super concerned just yet, I think by 9 months I may want more extensive testing...I may ask her if that's a good time frame. The only thing that sits in the back of my mind is that it took my parents seven years to conceive me.

Do you know why it took them so long?

I mean, you did have a son.. so I wouldn't be SUPER worried, KWIM? (I mean of course there's always secondary IF... you just never know, but still).

Sidenote: My mom had NO trouble conceiving my brother and I... so who knows what that means!

I would maybe start off by asking WHEN you should be concerned (like after how many months).... if she says 6 months - then perfect. If she says 9... you can choose from there. Maybe tell her you've been trying that long - it's up to you.

Got it!

I'm really not sure why it took them so long but I do think back then they didn't really go for all of this extensive testing. Who knows though - we never really spoke about it for some reason.

Yeah, I'll just talk to her and see what she says - I'd rather be honest because I don't ever want to catch myself in a lie!

I would be honest. Tell her all the things you have been doing (timed BD, charting, OPK's etc.) so that they know you have been serious about it. I hope your appointment goes well.Chat Icon

I would tell her the truth.

I think at 6 months, she will tell you to wait, but at least she will know you are trying.

Diana, I have an appt for March 9th with Dr. Hanauer; this is our 5th month of trying and I am starting to get concerned too. I didn't know what to expect with what she would say; if she owuld think I was crazy for coming in after only 5 months of teying; I know she originally dsaid avg. is a year. Chat Icon This will be my first child though, so I am wondering what she would say.....

Re: How long should I tell my obgyn we've been TTC - Update

I was honest with my Dr last week and because of my whacky cycles and what not, she wants me in for testing now, and I do too. I don't see the point in waiting. My friend recently showed me an article about secondary infertility and how common it can be, so I want to know if there are issues right now- which I think there are. I am not at all trying to scare you, though I realize it may have just come off that way, I'm just venting my own BS. Sorry for going off on my own. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think I'll make an appt with my ob for 2 months out. That would put me at that 9 month mark too...

She did ask my about my cycles and they are very consistent from month to month so that wasn't a concern for her. I am def. going back and forth with my decision to wait the three months. If I wait and it doesn't happen I'll think I just wasted time, but yet at this time I'm still on the "letting nature take it's course" mindset.

I hope everything is fine with the both of us and we get our BFPs real soon! Chat Icon
