How's about we do a Helpful Book & Video list...
things you LOVED
things you HATED
since the book question is asked EVERY time a new person comes to the board (understandably so) and the video thing is hot right now...maybe this would be helpful!!!!

I liked/loved belly laughs (I read it for dd #1).
what to expect (I know some people don't care for it - but I found that it was to the point and if you have a question it DOES answer it without being all rosy and cheery it is actually more accurate.
Happiest baby on the block I highly recommend.
American Academy of pediatrics has a book that I found can be helpful for certain aspects of issues that can come up.
I found when the baby came that what to expect the 1st year and what to expect the toddler years was very helpful. It breaks everything down by month and tells you what they might be doing, should be doing etc. It gives you an idea if there might be issues that you want to discuss with your ped.
Also Dr Sears vaccination book was helpful he breaks down every shot- tells you why they give it, what the disease is, is it treatable, what the risks of the shot are, the ingredients, the side effects, why you want to or might not want to give the shot.

All of the books mentioned can be helpful at some point or another. For parenting I really liked The Happiest Baby on the Block.
I loved registering for weekly updates at babycenter.com and getting an email of how big the baby is, what's going on etc. Those were really helpful.
I read the Baby Whisperer and it was a waste of time!

Baby Bargains is an AMAZING book. It basically is Consumer Reports for baby stuff. I used Bridal Bargains for the wedding and a using Baby Bargains as my BIBLE for wedding stuff (not meaning to offend anyone).
They review EVERYTHING and give honest ratings. They do NOT give something an A just because it's expensive...they give real, honest quality reviews, etc...

i loved the 2 books i got dh better then the ones I have for myself....
Be Prepared: A practical handbook for new dads ( this book has alot of references for once the baby is born- different ways to wash them, diaper change them etc...)
and

( i found it to be a good reflection on how you know you want to be a parent, and the things you go through durring pregnancy, but with more laughs thrown in..)

Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy - I liked the setup way more than the What to Expect book. Concise but has a lot of info

Baby Bargains is great.
