Toys for a Newborn?

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but is a newborn supposed to have toys? My DD has a mobile in her crib, a tiny bear rattle and she stares at her crib bumper, but that's it...

Should I get her something more "stimulating?"

Re: Toys for a Newborn?

A ceiling fan was his favorite toy as a newborn Chat Icon They really don't need toys at that age- they love staring at you and listening to your voice. My guy also loved lights. I'd say around 2 1/2 months he started noticing his mobile and the other toys I had for him.

i don't think they need toys at that age. when DS was a newborn he loved his mobile and the lights on his bouncer, that's about it. he was more interested in being snuggled Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

the lights on the bouncer and the play gym were helpful when I needed to get something done. The playgym was also great for tummy time

Re: Toys for a Newborn?

DS is only becoming interested in toys now.... he's 3 months

the first items of interest:
his mobile (pictured below)
soft blocks with little crinkly things on it
lamaze toys for the carseat
his playmat

at around 2.5 months, he began to like his swings and bouncy seat.... that's it

DD had a Sassy mirror with some crinkly toys on it. She loved that thing! It was great for tummy time..she would try to pick her head up to look in the mirror when I stood it up on the floor.

She's way too young. My DD only started clearly noticing the mobile or us even when she was about 5 weeks old.

Re: Toys for a Newborn?

DS is 4 weeks old. He seems to really like the Lamaze toys, especially Freddie the Firefly and Stretch the Giraffe. When I show them to him, he stares at them and reaches for them. I don't think toys are necessary for a newborn though. Lights and mobiles should be fine.
