This is normal right- 6 month old sick????

Wednesday night my ds started getting sick. He's been very congested, coughing a lot and therefore throwing up after the coughing. He's absolutely miserable.

We took him to the ped yesterday. He doesn't have a fever or diarrhea so they said he's fine.

Last night he was up every hour and sometimes every half hour. I finally got him to go back to sleep in the glider and then we moved onto the couch.

But he is absolutely miserable. Won't nap. Didn't sleep last night. Won't eat!!!! He has maybe 2 ounces every 5 hours if we're lucky. It's a struggle just to get him to eat. Chat Icon

Is this normal? We're on day 4 here and he doesn't seem to be getting any better.

I'm just so tired... Chat Icon

It sucks so bad when they are so little and get sick. Sadly, it sounds totally normal. As long as he's taking in some fluids and having wet diapers, he'll be fine.

We used a warm mist humidifier, Vicks Baby vapo rub and nasal drops with a boogey sucker. We have a battery operated one that works wonders- and we'd do it right before feedings as well as right before bed. Also- give him some Motrin- it's an anti inflammatory and might help.

You could also try raising the head of his crib a bit.

Poor little guy (and mommy)! That's confusing, no fever or diarrhea, but not eating much at ALL? Chat Icon Chat Icon I wonder if he's teething, maybe his gums are bothering him?? Still though I'd be concerned with the small amount he's eating/drinking, could he be constipated???
Hopefully a BTDT will chime in ,but I hope he's feeling better and sleeping better soon. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

They sell it at BRU- and it plays MUSIC. DD still hates it- but at least it's quick.

Exactly what she said!!

Unfortunately it's all "normal" for a sick baby...and it completely stinks!

We use a vaporizer instead of a warm mist humidifier - same concept though. We put the medicine in the vaporizer itself.

I completely agree about aspirating him right before he eats...may give him enough breathing room before more mucous builds up and discourages him from eating.

Poor little guy...hope he feels better soon!

The stupid ped we saw said there's no point in giving motrin. Tylenol works just fine, he said. Chat Icon

Yeah we have a nasal aspirator, the saline stuff, vicks vapor rub, vicks plug in and the vicks cool mist dehumidifier. I even tried having him sleep in his car seat and he wasn't having it.

Re: This is normal right- 6 month old sick????

As for the Motrin, my ped said to watch that with some babies because it can irritate the stomach....so she told us (this past time) to stick with Tylenol as well.

There is nothing worse than a virus - especially this age - because there isn't much you can give them other than tylenol/motrin to help ease the symptoms

Poor baby.

My only advice would be to give him a nice warm bath every day, saline drops and aspirator thing, and def a warm mist humidifier at night.

Maybe he's getting a tooth. DD had the SAME thing last week, horrible congestion-she couldn't even eat. Then Sunday she had a tooth break thru!

DD had very similiar symptoms and it turns out she had a full blown ear infection- without having a fever! The main flag for that is that she would NOT sleep on her back anymore... only on us! I would take her in just so they can double check his ears!

My 5 month old DS has a cold too. I think they have trouble sleeping/eating because they can't breathe out of their little nose! I hope he feels better soon!Chat Icon

Is he on a nebulizer, sounds like he needs one! The pediatrician will want to know if he is not eating. 2 oz every 5 hours is not fine and I would stress that!! I would call them. My 2 month old just had this(no fever). They put him on a nebulizer and amoxil to prevent pneumonia.

I gave him a bath last night and he screamed bloody murder. Chat Icon He's definitely not making this easy.

So should i not be using a cool mist humidifier?
