Clueless guy in the diner...smoking related
Before I go into this story, I have nothing personal against people who smoke, but this was just, well, stupid.
DH and I went for breakfast this am at a diner and as my DH opens the door to the resturant he says to me "and this guy is smoking a cigarette". Inside a man, had to be around my age (early 30's) was standing there smoking a cigarette like it was nothing. I am getting over a horrible cold and can barely breath (although even if I wasn't I would take issue with it). So I said "are you f-ing kidding me" and held my breath until we went into the 2nd double doors where I told the host that some guy was smoking a cigarette in there. The guy must have heard me cause he gave me the look of death (I mean part of me wondered if he was going to run back inside and yell or key my car or something). Ok buddy, not only are you doing something that is inconsiderate, but it is also illegal, so why are you giving ME looks that can kill??? If you don't want to stand outside to smoke, then don't smoke. Heck, it wasn't even cold out! Some people are so clueless and have such an over-grown sense of entitlement, it drives me nuts!
Anyway, I felt like sharing...

Smoking is fine--until the point at which someone who didn't choose to inhale your smoke is forced to do so.
This happens outside of buildings as well as inside, and there are old people, cancer patients, and babies all over NYC & the country being forced to inhale tons of smoke each day --along with all of us and our loved ones.
I cannot WAIT for the day when our culture and our law comes to understand how horrible this is. I mean, you can't spit on people on the street--right? Or shoot them with waterguns.... Why can people smoke on others?

That's rude... respect the law and be considerate of others.
If you want to smoke - fine, but don't totally disregard the law and other people's health.

I don't think it was necessary to curse at him but he knew he did not belong there. I am surprised someone at the diner didn't say anything to him before you mentioned it to them.

I do the same thing... I would have said the same thing. I think it is rude to light up as your walking out some doors,., or standing in a door way (half inside / half out side). I shouldn't have to deal with someone else's habit. Especially near food establishments. JMHO

its very rude..... the second hand smoke that people get...
dh and aunt uncle- HEAVY smokers- so much so that their walls would turn YELLOW- they finally painted their walls a bright yellow after being tired of painting all the time... they had a daughter... she had ASTHMA ATTACKS from the second hand smoke... she had no choice but to live in the house at 5 years old and get these attacks which they had to take her to the emergency room for...

I don't know the "are you effing kidding me" is a bit of an overblown reaction. You could give the guy the benefit of the doubt and let him know smoking indoors is illegal in NYS.
I smoked when I was in college, this was before smoking inside was illegal in NY. My BF and I took a trip out to CA, we were in a bar so I lit up. Lots of people were giving me strange looks and then a guy came up to me and told me very politely that smoking inside is illegal in California. I had no idea and put it out right away.

Some people are so clueless and have such an over-grown sense of entitlement, it drives me nuts!
That's my issue with most smokers (not all, because I do know some courteous smokers.)
I ended up in a debate with one smoker about tossing cigarette butts anywhere they pleased and her response was "Well what am I supposed to do if there are no cigarette receptacles provided for smokers!" I made the suggestion of carrying around a water bottle partially filled and placing cigarettes butts in there. Apparently that was a nonsense suggestion. This woman went as far as to say as "that's what street sweepers & cleaners are for." The poster I was debating with is a pretty smart woman and I usually agree with her posts, but as a smoker, she just has a sense of entitlement.
I compared it to having dogs. There aren't trash receptacles when I take them for walks, but yet I carry bags with me to pick up their stool and carry their stool with me until I get home! I don't just leave it there b/c there's no place to throw it out. That comparison got me in trouble with one of the mods. Apparently, she's a smoker.

ITA. It's gross and inconsiderate AND illegal.
Isn't it against health codes to smoke within 20ft of the entrance or something.
I hate when I have to walk past one of the waiters or waitresses smoking out front. It grosses me out.

There are all out there (and I used to smoke but NEVER did anything like that). We were at chilis not that long ago and two women in their 60's were standing in that area between the two doors lighting up their cigarettes and smoking away - they went to leave as DH, DD and I were walking out (I was carrying DD who is 17 months) and the woman on her way out turns around and instead of blowing the smoke OUT the door as she walks out - turns around and BLOWS it right in DD and my face and then walks out.

I said it to DH not to him. If he heard me, which he probably did, to be honest don't really care much. As far as he was concerned I could have been saying that about something else. I have had bad experiences with "educating" smokers. Let's just say they have been less than considerate about it. My sister, 8 months pregnant with my niece, had to walk through a cloud of smoke when leaving a resturant because 2 smokers were smoking right in front of the door. With people with asthma, PG people showing and not, elderly, people with other health issues walking around it is ridiculous to smoke where he was. Plus, I have made a conscious decision not to smoke, so I don't want to inhale it. If he got offended by me saying what I said to DH, which I doubt, I am more offened by assult he made on my health and DH's health...as well as anyone else walking in or out.
The reason no one in the resturant probably said anything before I did is because they were crazy busy. As soon as I said something to the host he seated us and then went back and said something to the guy. I'm sure the guy got educated by the host. I had a feeling based on the looks we got he knew he wasn't doing the right thing.

Sorry, I misread that part. I agree he had no business standing inside.

I agree with Blue Bug... I call people out on it all the time... educate smokers... that's funny - half the time they have no idea that other people don't want to smell their stink! Sorry if it hurts, but seriously, it amazes me that anyone thinks that the rest of us don't mind the cloud that exists outside any entrance... if it's too cold, maybe it's time to quit! It's absolutely the most gross thing.
