Not gaining enough weight

I am 29 weeks 3 days. I had a dr's appt today. I have only gained 10 pounds so far.

The doctor was taken aback at first, but everything seemed to be measuring on target, hb was strong etc.

The paranoid part of me is now wondering if there is anything wrong with me.

I mean I was not skinny to begin with. In fact before I got pregnant I could stand to lose a few lol.

I eat my three meals a day, and sensible snacks in between. Basically I eat when I am hungry, I do not make a pig of myself. The weight has seemed to all go to my belly.

Please tell me that there are some of you out there that have not had too significant of a weight gain?

Re: Not gaining enough weight

i had not gained too much at that point, either. aside from telling me to eat some ice cream (and i think he was kidding Chat Icon ) , my doc didn't make anything of it.

most of your weight should be gained in the next 6-8 weeks, as the baby's growth skyrockets.

i wouldn't worry about it at all. Chat Icon

Re: Not gaining enough weight

I had severe hyperemesis with my son ( throwing up)...I didnt gain any weight till I was 36 weeks PG. I gained almost 20 lbs in that last month, but weighed less then pre PG and my boy is healthy as ever!

Re: Not gaining enough weight

I am the same with you although I am only 19wks.

At my last appt. at 16wks, I had only gained one pound! I don't know. It concerns me too but the baby was fine.

I have another appt next week and my pre-pregnancy clothes still fit (esp. pants) perfectly. I was plus-size before so I don't know if it matters.

I like you only eat when I'm hungry and can't just seem to eat as big a plate as I could pre-pregnancy.

I have no answer for you just Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Don't worry too much as long as the baby is fine. I am so nervous about my level II next week. I also don't have much of a belly to speak of yet!

I was at the doctor's last week (25 1/2 weeks along) and I've only gained 3 pounds. The doctor said as long as I am eating and the baby is growing not be concerned.

I am exactly the same - 19w today, last visit to the Dr. I had gained 1 lb. According to my scale @ home, I haven't gained anything ........
Dr. said I was fine.

I was not thin prepregnancy. Not plus size, but not thin either - I eat only when I'm hungry, can only eat very small meals and do my best not to eat crap -
if the Dr. isn't concerned, and the baby is growing - I am sure you are fine.

I have not been sick at all this entire pregnancy.

Like you I am measuring perfectly. I guess hearing people's comments and such get to me sometimes.

I tell you I am usually not an overly cautious paranoid person, but pregnancy surely does make you that way.Chat Icon

Re: Not gaining enough weight

I am 32 weeks pregnant and have gained 7lbs. I have not been sick at all, but I have very little appetite. The dr. said the baby is measuring perfectly as is my belly, so I am trying to consider myself lucky.

My arms and legs are the thinnest they have been since HS and I am hoping that it stays that way after baby comes!

AS LONG AS THE BABY IS MEASURING FINE. I know people who ended up weighing less after delivery then before they got preg.

Re: Not gaining enough weight

At my 21 wk appt I FINALLY gained some weight - 5lbs....and I am not a small girl either. I think everyone is different. I figure at my next appt which will be 26wks, if I gain another 5 lbs, that will put me at 10, so I guess we are about the same. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Be happy you are not packing on the pounds!

Re: Not gaining enough weight

ME!!! Search old posts and you will keep seeing how I was worried about not gaining. At 29 weeks I had only gained 8 or 9 lbs. I had bad MS but did not really vomit. I was worried that meant the baby would be small. My belly was getting big but the scale wasn't increasing much. I have always been average weight, although I was up over my average when i got pg,by about 15 lbs but still not overweight. My OB told me some women don't gain more than 10 or so lbs, but can still have an 8 lb baby.

Sure enough, at 32 weeks, I had only gained 14 lbs by then and baby was weighing 5.8 lbs on the growth sono (which is on the large side of the scale for a baby not due for another 8 weeks). So that proved the amt of our weight gain doesn't mean baby will be small (or big). I am now at 36 weeks and up to 17 lbs gained. The last 7 lbs has come on about 1 lb a week, and according to the dr, baby will be about 8.5 to 9 lbs at my 39 week csection.

Dont worry, doesnt mean ANYTHING is wrong. Another poster was like this too, MrsFlatbread. Baby was also not a small one, weighing in the 8lb range when born.

Oh, and I eat whatever is appealing to me from day one, even if it's high calorie, I figured I could use the extra calories...

Re: Not gaining enough weight

I'm 22 weeks pregnant and am just now the same weight as I was before I was pregnant. Up until last week, I was negative 4 pounds. I would be so happy to be +10 pounds at 29 weeks.

I am 27 weeks and I still am below my pre-pregnancy weight. My midwife isn't concerned. I am eating. baby is healthy and is actually measuring ahead 10 days by ultrasound and belly measurements....

Everyone puts on different amounts of weight and at different times. As long as baby is healthy try not to worry!

Re: Not gaining enough weight

I gained a total of 18 pounds (as of the mornng I had my c-section) and I had not gained any weight the first 17 or so weeks. If it wasn't for the increasing amniotic fluid the last few weeks it would have been less than that. I was so worried but it was for little reason. I had almost a 9 pound baby boy!! The best part...is 8 days after I gave birth I was wearing my size 2 jeans!!!!Chat Icon I do not even look like I had a baby 3 weeks ago...

Just make sure you eat and eat healthy and everything will be fine!!!!Chat Icon

Re: Not gaining enough weight

I haven't gained ANY weight so far & I am 37weeks & 2 days along. I was not skinny to begin with, I definately needed to lose some weight & I was trying to before getting pregnant. By the time I was 16 weeks, I had lost a total of 14 lbs. My doc was not worried because the baby was measuring right on target. She said a long as he continued to gain weight as he should, then she is not worried about my weight. Towards the end of the 2nd trimester I started to finally regain the weight I had lost. As of last friday I was still 1 lb lighter than my prepregnancy weight. Don't worry yourself too much about it as long as the baby is gaining weight like he/she should be.

ETA: I had NO morning sickness at all, so weight loss was not due to throwing up all day. During the 1st trimester I didnt have much of an appetite & had to force myself to eat. But I regained my appetite in the 2nd trimester.

I'm 25 weeks and gained 10lbs so far... I was normal weight for my height before. As long as the baby is fine and is gaining at a normal rate I dont see why your Dr. would even have an issue with it Chat Icon

Why was your Dr. taken aback? I gained very little weight with both pregnancies, and Dr. said it was ok as long as the baby was gaining weight! My first I gained 21 pounds and he was 9 7, and my second I gained 14 pounds, and he was 9 1. Both big and healthy!

I am guessing because I had not gained any weight since my last visit3 weeks ago and then the overall weight gain was not so significant. Who knows?

After measuring me and I was right on target she seemed fine.

I just get a bit paranoid, because typically you equate pregnancy with alot of weight gain.

I am happy to know that is not the case all the time.

Thanks ladies for your input.

i am 19 wks myself and have had bad bad hyperemesis since wk 7 honestly..i have an appetite but cant keep alot down..its gotten better bc the Dr. gave me a nausea medicine and i think i am moving out of the bad phase of pregnancy...i am expecting twins so i will gain slightly more but at 19 wks i am up 20 lbs....i am thin normally so i had to put on 8 lbs just to be average weight and not underweight.....as long as babies healthy..has good heartbeat and measures up well dont worry!!Chat Icon

There were weeks at a time that I did not gain anything from appointment to appointment, but when the measured my stomach, it was right where it needed to be. My doctor was not concerned at all.

There was actually one appointment where my doctor told me to not mention my lack of weight gain again b/c if I mentioned it to the wrong person...I might get slapped!!! She said enjoy the fact that I did not gain that much b/c the next pregnancy could be very different!

I would not worry about it. If you are eating healthy food and good meals and not dieting I wouldn't worry. If you were watching what you eat and dieting then it would be another story. Not everyone gains a lot of weight - you might be one of those people. Did they check your thyroid just in case?
