I am planning on getting a private room, which I hope to god will be available. I am sure I will shower-- depending on how long I am there for. I feel gross if I don't shower... but I guess it depends on how I am feeling.
I feel the same exact way!!!

Re: While you are in the hospital
The first time around I have a private room with my own bath/shower. I hope for the same this time but if not I will still take a shower. I couldn't wait to get in there and clean up!!!

just the mere thought of not showering after giving birth is
I could not WAIT to take a shower after my c-section
Exactly! The one thing I looked forward to is taking a long hot shower and I had a natural birth. My roommate had a C-section and on day 2 the nurses came in to check her bandages an the smell that came over my side of the room was repulsive. The nurses kept insisting she shower No matter how good you wash with a washcloth nothing is like a shower!
Bring your own Lysol and spray everything down before you use it and after you use it. And have your roommates do the same.

i don't know, i am not a person who enjoys sharing the bathroom with anyone. when i had my son i took a shower because i was alone in the room. the other times i washed from head to toe with a basin and dh changed the water for me a few times. i guess its my germ-o-phobe getting the best of me but i just find it gross to shower in a hospital in a shower where strangers just showered and it has not been bleached what can i say i have some issues
Maybe you should find another hospital then b/c you obviously do not feel comfortable in the one you are delivering in.
I took a shower. OMG. How could you NOT?

You will need to shower. When you are dirty and bleeding it simply isnt sanitary for you or anyone else.

Re: While you are in the hospital
Something about standing in a shower that someone else was just bleeding in upsets me, b/c some kinds of viruses don't die just b/c water was running in that shower. Do they disinfect the shower after each person's use? I would need to be sure of this otherwise it seems like a health hazard. That would be a large concern of mine.

I don't agree that mjeans she is uncomfortable with HER hospital. She is uncomfortable showering in a shower that someone else was bleeding in. I feel the same way. I don't know if I feel flip flops are enough...maybe, I would have to see and find out what they do to disinfect that shower after each person's use.

This is one of the reason why I HAD TO have a private room. I still wore flip flops in it and it was in my own room.
I did not want to share the toilet either.
You do bleed a lot. I can understand the uncomfortable aspect of it.

out of all these responses i am glad one person understands how i feel... i think it is kind of silly to say i should find another hospital, the skills of my doctor and the level of care i get has nothing to do with the conditons of a shower! i really do think it is gross to shower in a room with other people when the stall isnt steralized. if i had a private room i would still be grossed out, but at least it would only be me in it for the short time i was there. i also don't plan on sitting in my clothes for 5 days and smelling. when i had my son i cleaned myself everyday from the moment they made me get up and after every time i went to the bathroom. i think its disgusting to be dirty and not shower but for myself i find it more disgusting to have to use a public toilet/shower where god knows what is breeding. but then again thats just my opinion

I totally understand and think to say that you should find another hospital is not the issue, don't know where that could be construed from what you said. I also agree, while not showering is gross and unsanitary, so does using a shower that someone I have no clue or no relationship with about bled profusely in. If I am forced to share a room, I would have to assess the situation to see if I feel comfortable with their protocol of shower disinfection. DH and I want a private room for reasons like this...I can't take the thought of sharing a bloody bathroom with someone. My DH even told me he would say let's pay for the suite if that's all that's left b/c he doesn't blame me for the way I feel.
Not odd to be concerned with this at all and I would want to SEE them disinfect the shower/toilets and KNOW what their protocol is on that. And if I have to share a room b/c no private ones are available, the nurses would be getting buzzed to come clean the bathroom if I see blood. I'm sorry but the hospitals should not put their patients in a position to be exposed to other's possible viruses.
I'm with you on this.

Re: While you are in the hospital
I showere the day after I had DS (he was botn at 11pm) and I felt great after the shower.
But, I had a private room which helped. I am a germophobe too so I had clorox wipes with me and since I was too sore DH wiped it down. Oh...and I had cheap flip flops that i threw out there!

Re: While you are in the hospital
I have my nursing license. I think your concerns are valid. I had my son 3 years ago. You will need a shower! I can't explain how gross you will feel if you don't! Bring a pair of cheap flip flops that you can throw out. You can bring a disposable vinyl bath mat.The shower will make you feel so much better. You will be all bloody if you have a vag delivery! You can't take a shower fast enough.
*** Important part... Tell the nurse on duty of your concerns. There is no reason why they can't have housekeeping clean the shower before you take one. You can bring cleaning supplies with you (bleach, wipes, lysol spray with you when you pack your bag to use in between to make you feel more comfortable. I had a private room and the cleaning staff came in before I took one each morning. I would make sure they had them come in before you take one and ask them to come in and clean regularly.
It is really in the their best interest to keep their patients as healthy as possible from hospital born infections. It is not a strange request to keep the room as clean as possible with post-partum woman.
I hope this was helpful info.

Re: While you are in the hospital
I paid for my own private room thank god. And, I showered - it's finally what made me feel human again!
ETA: I will never NOT have a private room. After all the bleeding that goes on - it's just awful. I couldn't imagine sharing with another person.

Yeah well it's too bad many of the hospitals private rooms are first come first serve. So as much as I am willing to pay for one and want one, I may be denied. That would majorly suck and I would not have a choice.
