I don't understand how a mother could say this to her child...

I was in the BBB in Westbury today. I was bottle feeding Abby in the nursing room which is inside the ladies room behind a closed door. On the other side of the door, in the bathroom section, a mom is obviously having a hard time with her son. He wasn't really acting out (or so I could hear), he seemed to just be acting silly.

She says to him:

"You're an a$$. I honestly don't know how you made it to the fourth grade. Actually, I don't know how you made it to the second grade much less the fourth."

Mind you, I only HEARD this and I do not know what may have happened before this incident. But I venture to say this was not the first time she has spoken to him that way and it is no excuse.

When I walked out, it was then apparent that she was preparing him for Christmas pictures and he was a little bit frisky.

I could never imagine speaking this way to a child. I don't get confrontational around children, but I mentally b*tch slapped her. Shame on you lady! SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!!!

That makes me so mad - she's an abusive, disgusting woman Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETS: Maybe I should edit this - maybe I was quick to judge when making this comment, but I will say I'm disgusted by the comments - but I don't know her obviously and shouldn't say she's abusive and disgusting based on this

She had an infant in a stroller as well. I'm thinking: "Oh Geez, someone had to sleep with her twice."

I know that wasn't very nice but good Lord, she deserved it.

Really sick. When I hear these stories (and we do too often) it always makes me want to hand them a card with this:

If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn.
If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.
If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive.
If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves.
If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy.
If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy.
If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty.
If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence.
If children live with tolerance, they learn patience.
If children live with praise, they learn appreciation.
If children live with acceptance, they learn to love.
If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves.
If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal.
If children live with sharing, they learn generosity.
If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness.
If children live with fairness, they learn justice.
If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect.
If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those about them.
If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.

Had I confronted her, I wouldnt have done so with Abby in a stroller. She did compliment me on her - though I was skeeved. I DEFINITELY could have taken her down if I needed to defend myself. She was short and bottom heavy.

Again, I am not nice but when you demean a child, it is open season.

OMG, I cannot imagine ever saying something like that to DS even if I was not happy with him because he is not behaving.

This is disturbing behavior from a mother.

What she said to her son is absolutely disgusting and she should be ashamed of herself. I sometimes wonder how these parents would feel if someone were to tape record them saying this stuff to their child and then played it back for them. I would never say that to anyone, most of all my child.

Hmmmmmm...

Im kind of torn on the whole thing...

We moms are, afterall, human. Maybe she is having a bad day. Maybe she's been fired, her DH is having an affair, and the dryer ate her underwear.

I know I have said things to my kids, that if you didnt know me, you might think I was a bad mom. (and if you did know me you might think that anyway) Just today the girls and I were discussing which one of them was the bigger PITA.

Im not making excuses for her. It's just that sometimes they really do just drive you completely crazy....

Sometimes it's not so much the things you say but the things you do that have a greater effect....I know of someone who manipulates his children by telling them how much he loves them. Yet he is abusing them just the same..KWIM?

I have said things that I didn't mean, and I apologize and also regret it. We are only human.

I'm totally willing to believe a mommy can have a bad day, heck I think most folks (certainly everyone on this board anyway!) are empathetic in the extreme to that.... but with that said... the level of vitriol described in the OP really does come awfully close to verbal abuse IMHO. I mean its one thing to have an angry moment, but it feels like her rant was so premeditated (or... perhaps... familiar?)??? I don't know, tough call but I feel bad for the child nonetheless....

I think the difference is that is tearing down that little boy. It's not an "I'm aggravated" or the joking over who is a bigger pain in the tush.

We've all said things that we've regretted in our lives & to our children (and if you haven't yet, I can assure you that you will)

Re: I don't understand how a mother could say this to her child...

If you think that was bad. I work in a public library and one afternoon I saw a family walking out. They had a toddler in a stroller (maybe 2-2/12) and the toddler was crying.

The father told the toddler. "I told you to shut up. If you don't shut up, I'm gonna punch you in the mouth"Chat Icon This was not done in a joking manner either. This was a guy trying to be tough. This was so sad. I glared at him the whole time they walked out...
