HOw to stop the milk supply

I think today might be my last day of breastfeeding. I am going back to work soon and want to get DD on a better schedule. How do you stop the milk supply?

TIA

What they told me was to wear a very tight sports bra, use ice packs for engorgement, and don't pump or nurse. Also, when you're in the shower, try not to let warm/hot water fall on them for an extended period of time.

Well by stopping breastfeeding all together, it will slow down ALOT. Also wear well-fitted sports bras (if your breasts hang, it will signal your brain off to produce more milk) and when you shower, do not face the water.. have the hot water towards your back. When you are engorged, put ice packs on your chest, it will alleviate them.. Good luck.

Stopping breastfeeding cold turkey can do some wild things to your hormone levels. Have you considered just cutting half the feedings first?

Yes, you should start replacing feedings and slowly wean for the comfort of yourself and the comfort of your baby's stomach and emotionally. Do you want to stop altogether or just while you are away?

I agree! Dont just stop or you will become engorged and it will be very painfull, you have to continue to BF but just not as offten till your milk starts to dry up. Chat Icon

Speaking from someone who made this mistake, it is VERY painful to just stop. You have to slow down little by little.

I wore my bra, a sports bra, and also tied a ripped sheet around my breasts. I did not BF though. I wore all that in the shower as well. And did not let the water pound on my breasts. I used a detachable shower head. I guess b/c of all that i did, my breasts didnt get engorged at all, didnt hurt at all, and after a week went by, i removed it all and they were fine.

Re: HOw to stop the milk supply

I have * heard* that taking the BCP may dry the milk up but for me I weaned very slowly- the whole process took over a month because I didnt want to get engorged or possibly mastitis.

Mine took about 1 week to 2 weeks. It stopped hurting after a couple days but there was still leakage.

Re: HOw to stop the milk supply

If you have been BFing for a number of weeks you cannot just stop. It is NOT the same as a new mother who never BF.

Your baby needs time to move over to formula. It could take your baby time to get used to a new food source. You mix 1/4 formula with 3/4 BM for a few days, then 1/2, 1/2 then 3/4 formula, 1/4 BM until your baby is doing fine on all formula.
Also, just stopping cold turkey when you have an established milk supply puts you at a high risk of plugged ducts and a breast infection which not only hurts but causes a fever.
There is really no reason to stop BF because you are going back to work anyway...you can do both if you want. Formula may or may not help a "schedule" too.

Please make sure your baby is able to handle formula before you dry up your milk supply too. If he/she can't you may need to continue BF.

At first I did make that mistake, by the time the end of the day came I was ready to kill myself!! With the advice of the ladies on here, I pumped to relieve the pressure, than slowly phased it out. It took about a week or 2.
