Does the Pediatrician you select need to be affiliated with your hospital?
My mom said that the pediatrician you are using usually comes to the hospital to check out the baby after its born. Is this true? Or can it just be whoever is on call?
My issue is that I am delivering in Manhattan, which while 4 miles from me-- is a PITA to get to on a regular basis, so my pediatrician will probably be on the west side of the Hudson.

I've never heard this before. Hmmmm...I am delivering at Good Sam (about 20 min. from me), and I have already chosen a ped. that is very close to my house.

No.... if your PEd can't come and do the examination on the baby they will have a staff pediatrician do it.
Some peds are VERY particular and want to see the baby right away in the hospital.
I would check with your ped and make sure they are ok with just having the hospital staff do the exam.

I am sure my mom's recollection of this is from when I was born-- but I had never heard of it either, never seen it mentioned on here, etc.
I guess it's a good question to ask when interviewing peds.

This is what we were told at my childbirth class. I think the pediatricians we're looking at are affiliated with the hospital where I'll be delivering. I assume if you choose a pediatrician who isn't affiliated, someone else at the hospital can do the checkup.

Re: Does the Pediatrician you select need to be affiliated with your hospital?
If the ped you choose is associated with the hospital you are delivering at, he/she will usually come see the baby when it is born. If the ped is associated with a different hospital he/she cannot come, but your OB or the hospital arranges for a ped associated with the hospital to be there. That's my case. I'm delivering at Mt Sinai, but our ped is closer to our apt and associated with NYU hospital.

Re: Does the Pediatrician you select need to be affiliated with your hospital?
Your baby will be taken care by the hospital PED 1st. Regardless of who your PED is.
Your ped needs to be affiliated with the hospital to come see the baby
They (nurses, staff) will ask you who your ped is. It's OK if you don't have one already because all babies are automatically assigned an hospital ped when they are born.
You might want to give your PED your EDD
When your baby is born, the staff will call your PED right away. They usually come the same day or following day. Your baby would have already been taken care by the hospital staff/PED.
HTH!

its preference, I want the pediatrician I pick to check the baby out at the hospital, but they DO have pediatricians on staff at the hospital to check the babies out in case your pediatrician isn't affiliated with the hospital....

It is not a big deal.
Our ped when DS was born was affiliated with our hospital, but he didn't come, his associates did.
But if you don't have a ped yet, or the ped isn't affiliated it is no b ig deal.

Re: Does the Pediatrician you select need to be affiliated with your hospital?
The ped we chose is not affiliated with the hospital I'm delivering at - its just not that close for us for that to make sense. Our regular ped will see the baby the day of or day after we are discharged.
However, it was important to me to meet the ped that we will have in the hospital as well and we had the opportunity to interview a couple in our birthing classes. I wanted to make sure we were on the same page regarding circumcision, hep b vaccine, etc.

Your pediatrician has to have privileges at your hospital in order for them to see your baby when he/she is born otherwise a staff pediatrician will look after the baby while you're in the hospital.

Exactly so if this matters to you, you would have to pick someone affliated with your hospital. I did, it's very important to me.

Re: Does the Pediatrician you select need to be affiliated with your hospital?
I didn't - honestly it isn't really a necessity although it is nice. I delivered DD at Columbia but I live in Nassau - so I wanted a Ped close to home - I will do the same thing for this baby. My ped asked me to call him from the hospital so I could set up an appt two days after I came home from the hospital. I just filled out a form for my ped and I believe they got the records that way.
If you find a ped affiliated with your hospital that is great - but also keep in mind if it is a group it might be another dr from that group rather than the one you chose.
Etd to add our OB at columbia gave us a list of Peds and suggested one that had a lot of experience and is very popular at Columbia. Since Columbia is a told ped hospital I wasn't too concerned who would be seeing DD but depending on your hospital you might feel differently.

Re: Does the Pediatrician you select need to be affiliated with your hospital?
No. I delivered at South Nassau and my Ped is located in Northport. When you are admitted they'll ask you if you have a ped affiliated w/ the hospital, if not they assign a staff ped to your baby.

Re: Does the Pediatrician you select need to be affiliated with your hospital?
He/She doesn't have to be. The hospital I am delivering at and my pediatrician are in opposite directions, with our house at the center, seperate counties and everything.
My peditrician told us that the hospital will have a staff pediatrician look at the baby and then by NYS law she (our pediatrician) has to see the baby within the first week.
