Birth plan?
So while "visiting" labor and delivery today, they asked me if I had a birth plan.
Do any of you and if yes, what types of things are in it?
TIA

Re: Birth plan?
I did for DS. Although I knew I was a c-section I had things like donating the placenta, no HepB shot in the delivery room (or at all for that matter), I wanted DS with me in recovery as long as possible before going to the nursery...things like that. I'll see if I can find mine.

Re: Birth plan?
at the hospital where i delivered they frowned upon birth plans. i was and asked why. they told me that it makes some of the nurses feel micromanaged/incompetent. so i never did one with DD#1 and everything was fine.
as long as you speak up when needed i don't think they are really necessary. they take good care of you. i don't plan on doing one this time around either.

Re: Birth plan?
My doctor laughs at birth plans. After my experience, so do I. In a perfect world, I was planning on having a vaginal delivery. Nope. Emergency c-section for me.

I only asked because the nurse in labor and delivery today asked me if i had one; as she was entering info into the computer I think the most important thing is to discuss things with your Dr and whomever you are bringing into the delivery room. For us the birthplan was not so much telling the Drs & nurses what to do, but rather my wishes for certain things, like I wanted to try & BF right away in recovery before DS went t the nursery...I did not approve of the HepB shot and would not consent to it...I wanted them to know that I wanted my placenta donated if it was deemed useful...I did not opt for cord blood....those kinds of things. I knew I was having a c-section, so I did not have some of the intense details that the samples have.

Re: Birth plan?
Personally I wouldn't worry too much about having a birth plan becomes I can tell you from experience that things don't really go according to plan and you don't really know what to expect. I of course wanted to deliver vaginally and try my best to do it naturally and because of circumstances I needed a C-section. I think if you have a very specific birth plan laid out you're setting yourself up to be disappointed because labor and delivery is so unpredictable. In the end you're going to do whatever is best for your baby at that time regardless of what you may have originally planned. Just my opinion.

Re: Birth plan?
The purpose of a birth plan is to let your wishes be known to those providing care for you without having to repeat everythign over and over, especially when you are delivering in a hospital where there is a good chance you will labor through a change of shift or two.
This being said, no one should EXPECT the birth to go according to the plan since labor is unpredictable.
SOme hospitals really like birth plans and are very receptive to them and like to have them on file, others are not as receptive.

Re: Birth plan?
My birth plan is not to have a birth plan ...IMO you can have birth 'hopes" , but to have any real expectations is unrealistic...So many things are out of your control, and you can only set yourself up for disappoinment if things don't go as planned if you have your heart set on something....I felt the same way going into it w/ DS and feel exactly the same way now...My only plan is to get to the hospital in time, be treated by professionals and bring home a healthy baby
