Repost...Down Syndrome Question
Does anyone know someone who has a child with ds that passed all the prenatal testing? I'm wondering how common this is.

Re: Repost...Down Syndrome Question
I do- 3 actually. It's NOT common though- I happen to work with the special needs population.
There was also a story about this recently in one of the magazines supplied by my OB's practice.
Remember- a screening is NOT foolproof- but it will give good estimates. With a number like 1/500 for example, your chances are .002%. Thats a pretty small chance.

Re: Repost...Down Syndrome Question
Plus I would say with the physical measurements in the level 2, etc...it's got to be pretty rare in someone who passed the tests and had good phsyical measurements (nasal bone, distance between eyes, bone measurements, heart and brain, etc).
I wonder if these people Porrruss referred to even had the testing that we have?

If you're referring to the ultrascreen and AFP- yes. If you mean amnio- then no. Amnio is 100% foolproof- which is why I had one myself.

Re: Repost...Down Syndrome Question
I just wanted to reiterate though- the chances of a fetus NOT showing any soft markers are VERY slim. The reason I personally *know* of 3 is because I have worked with a number of children with DS over the past few years.
BUT- those screening are just that, SCREENINGS. For example, you get back a number, like 1/10,000. Well- there has to be a one in that 10,000.

Right, other than Amnio I mean.

Re: Repost...Down Syndrome Question
As far as I know, only amnio or CVS give you a guarantee regarding DS. The screening tests are pretty accurate but not 100%.

Re: Repost...Down Syndrome Question
I know a girl who's results showed an elevetated risk, but apparently not enough to have her consider an Amnio. She did end up having a child with Down Syndrome.

ITA - you can get false positives or false negatives on the other testing but CVS and amnio are 100% accurate (provided of course the lab doesn't screw up).

Re: Repost...Down Syndrome Question
Yes, my best friend. With her 2nd baby, all tests came back fine, it wasnt until she was 34 weeks that they noticed a heart abnormality that was a ds marker. Even aftet she was assured that they didnt think her baby was a ds baby, it was confirmed at birth.
