Update AGAIN on 5th Disease situation
So i spoke to a dr tonight and they advised that I do not return to my building until I get blood results which indicate that I am immune to 5th Disease.
I emailed my principal and she suggested that I take a sick day tomorrow until she can speak to the "higher ups" to discuss my placement until bloodwork comes back.
I am EXTREMELY irritated that i have to use a sick day for this. I have 62 banked days and we are able to use (and be paid for) 60 on maternity leave so I have TWO days this whole year to "play with" and this is CERTAINLY NOT one of the times i want to use.
I emailed her again to ask if i can be "paid back" for this day being that, basically, this isnt my problem (didnt say it in that way ofcourse!)
Thoughts??

Really? I;ve never even heard of this. Did doc say when bloodwork would be back? Sounds extra precautionary to me, but then again, I don't work in a school...
Sorry, I'm no help.

Yes this is a big issue for healthcare workers and teachers. It is potentially harmful tot he developing fetus if youre exposed to Fifths Disease.

Re: Update AGAIN on 5th Disease situation
i had this scare too when i was about 9 weeks -
unfortunately, it is not considered a "childhood disease"; -if it were, the days you take would NOT come out of your sick bank
if you have 62 days now, you will still earn one a month, right? that is how it is in NYC; we get one added to our bank on the 15th of every month

You should definitely not be charged the day for this. They should have a policy in place when this happens. I've seen it happen in my district a few times and they basically place the teacher in another building as like a permanent sub.

I know how you feel. I had to take 5 sick days when a child of mine has chicken pox....I was mad that I had to use my days (plus it was my first year at that school) but in the end, no matter what, it's best for you. But def. follow up and try to get the day credited back...being that I was new there, I didn't want to make any waves.

I asked my aunt who is a teacher and she said that something sounds off about you having to take your day for this.

I would take it up with the union. Let them fight the battle on your behalf.
