What is wrong with cashiers?
It was bad enough on Saturday in Stop & Shop when my cashier hocked a loogie so she could taste the blueberry her coworker offered her as she waited on me.
Yesterday Maddie & I were on line at a local supermarket. She was sucking her thumb. It was her nap & today she isn't feeling well - fever this morning was 103- but even outside of these circumstances, she's a thumbsucker and she's going to do it.
The cashier said "She sucks her thumb?"
So I responded "Yes. I know - we've been trying to make her stop. Seems like she'll have to stop on her own."
The cashier leans down & says "I know something that will make her stop. My cousin sucked her thumb and her teeth got dented in on the top & are crooked- and now she's in school & has no friends. No one will talk to her because her teeth & she's a thumbsucker." (Maddie’s teeth are crooked from thumbsucking)
I look at her, completely in shock & say “It’s ok we’ve got her covered. I’m not worried about her thumbsucking.”
So Maddie ignores her & continues to take stuff out of my basket to help. She puts some gummy cherries on the conveyor belt that she picked out as a special treat for helping me.
The cashier said “I’m sorry, but we can’t give candy to little girls that suck their thumb.”
I look at her and say in a snide voice, “Thanks but WE’RE OK. I’m sure she’ll stop sucking her thumb once kindergarten starts.”
She said “Oh I thought she was like in 2nd grade or something.”
“No. And again, WE ARE FINE. I THINK I’ve GOT IT COVERED.”
Even if she was in 5th grade, is that acceptable? I realize this chick was maybe 16, but did she really think that she was going to get my daughter to stop sucking her thumb? Also…my little girl is going into kindergarten next year. As if she’s not nervous enough about going to a new school, now you’re going to make her worry that she’s not going to make any friends because her teeth are crooked? I’m glad Maddie was tired & wasn’t paying that much attention to her. She was more into the conveyor belt.
I haven't felt such a strong urge to slap someone in a long time.

W T F??? Who the heck is she?? I would have flipped my lid. I give you a lot of credit for keeping cool. I hope Maddie knows that the woman was rude & that she is a good girl. Dear lord do people think?
And if you told her it is OK to have a treat W T F is she to tell her she cannot have it? I am sooooo steamed over this! And it is not even my kid!

man people are just dumb!
Thank goodness you said something to her. Why the heck would you ever tell a child that this would result in her not having any friends? That's an awful thing to see, even from a 16 year old.
Again, i'm glad you said something. And glad Maddie wasn't paying much attention.

I get the same crap too because L sucks her thumb too!! Usually they ask what am I going to be doing to her to make her stop! Umm, nothing now!

- This is why I chose boy cashiers. They could give a rats azz if my kid was sucking her thumb (DD2 does!) or pulling every single magazine off the rack.

You should complain to the manager. That is SO completely unacceptable its not even funny!
When we were at King Kullen a few months ago, the cashier looked at my 4 year old son and said to him, "Whats your name?" and he looked at me, then back at her and said "You are a stranger and I am not going to tell you my name".
She looked at me with this FACE and said, "Well isn't HE rude!"
I wanted to slap her.
I am sorry you had to deal with that

I told my mom who is friendly with the owner there (It was Pat's for Northporters). She was livid. She's going to say something to the owner...
I know she's just a stupid girl who didn't know better & Maddie really wasn't paying attention no matter how much she was trying to engage her...well, except for when she told her about the candy & then I motioned to Maddie like she was the crazy lady.

I give you a lot of credit for not reaching across and choking her. What a nimrod! It's none of her business what your child does and does not do. I had a cashier at BRU go on and on about how it so bad I put my DS in daycare. I got so ****** I talked to the manager.

I've got a thumb sucker too and if someone would have said this to me I would NOT have been as nice as you were.
I personally dont think there is ANYTHING wrong with it. I sucked my thumb till I was 5 or 6 (maybe longer actually)
The cashier should have stuck her own thumb in her mouth
