Please tell me about Levittown
I notice there are quite a few homes here in the 300's, just wondering if there is a catch.

Been here since 2005 and we love it here. Great neighborhood, plenty of shopping, excellent schools, and my neighbors are really nice people. There is no catch to the prices of homes in Levittown....

i honestly just started randomly looking at homes, and i am starting to get excited b/c DH and I think we may be able to afford something sooner than we thought! Last time I looked there was really not much in the 300 range, and now I am surprised to see a whole lot! We will still prob need to wait about a year, but still.....i thought that this would not happen at all for us!

Dh grew up in Levittown, but I moved here in '03 when we got married.
Bought our first home here in '06. We looked in other neighborhoods, but we kept coming back here.

My DH grew up in levittown too and loved it. My ILs still live there and they live on a great block. I find that some blocks are nicer then others. We have friends that moved there in '06, there block is also very nice. I have been told though (and I am not sure if it is true) that if you stay in the Island Trees school district the taxes are cheaper because they get the benefit of all the big shopping centers.
Also all the house in Levittown are either capes or ranches and although they all started out looking the same when they were built in the 40s & 50s owners have done some amazing things to them over the years. Some of them though have not been touched in 50 years.
As other posters have mentioned there is great shopping (everything you could need is right there or a 15 min drive).

DH's family lives in levittown and they love it - terrific school district, good shopping, nice people. i think it's a great place to live, DH adn i actually just got a house in seaford but it'ss on the north side in the levittown school district.
no catch at all!

I grew up in Levittown & my parents sold their house only a year ago. Levittown was a great town to grow up in. Our community was so nice & everyone was so friendly. You always felt a sense of home when you were outside among your neighbors. Shopping is so close & you can even walk to different parks, pools & some shopping centers. I grew up in the Salk-MacArthur section better known as the "S" section. There were a lot of houses for sale in the past year or so but it is mostly all the "old timers" moving out & making room for the young couples. It was one of the "fewer" neighborhoods where you would actually see kids outside playing!!!
DH & I moved to Wantagh but remained in the Levittown Schools. We needed a bigger house then what my parents had but like an OP said, so many homeowners have completely rennovated or dormered their houses out that the "Levitt" look is not always in every house. The prices are not a catch though!

That's the main draw back. A lot of houses don't have basement. It depends which area though. I am in Hicksville at the border of Levittown and the Northern part does not have basement.

The one bad part is that we do not have a basement, but I do have an attached 1.5 car garage and a Huge Shed in the backyard. In the garage I lined the walls with storage shelves.
We have a lot of storage space and have not needed anymore, so that is good for us.
There are also the eaves in the upstairs bedrooms for storage.

We live in Levittown and LOVE it!!
i always rave about this town because it doesnt get enough credit.. its such a nice area to live in... schools are great, neighborhoods are wonderful and quiet!
i have never felt safer, and glad we moved here!!
my DH grew up in L-town ,
we are selling DH parents house in Levittown , its in my profile if you want to take a look!!!

I live south of levittown but its a great town, i know a bunch of people who live there and its a really nice area.
I go there all the time to shop, since its so close to my house.
There are tons of food stores and other stores for anything you could possibly need.
Its honestly where i do all my shopping

Been here since '04 and I love it. Great neighborhood for kids, very family friendly and I feel safe. I feel like it is its own little secret I know it got a very bad rep before from what I heard but because of the economy there are a lot of young families moving in. Everywhere you look someone is expanding their house I think its definitely an up and coming neighborhood. Only down side no basement but hey no flooding either

DH and I lived in Levittown all our lives until we moved to FL in 2005. My mom, MIL, and sis still live there in North Levittown. I lived in Island Trees and found that area to be so nice. Everything is just a few minutes away which i liked. I was able to walk to the supermarket. It is a nice town and don't be surprised by the house prices because due to the urgency that people want to sell they are willing to go very low. A few people i know had to do that just to sell their house on the island in the past year due to the market. It is a good time to take advantage.

my sis just moved there in October 07- they paid 362K for a 4 bdrm/ 2 bath house.....they're really happy with the area....they are in the Levittown school district, my niece will be starting school next year. I wish DH & I would've seen Levittown before buying in Queens! I love all the shopping on Hempstead Tpke!!

i grew up there too. i must know some of you... went to salk & macarthur, now i am moving back from lindenhurst. back in 01, i bought a bungalow by myself in lindy, i stayed here b/c i got more house for my money. now, i don't care... i am selling for zero profit to get back to levittown. it's so homey, cozy and lovely there.
public pools are awesome, i used to race in LSA when i was little. i hope my two little girls follow in my footsteps. there is also a really cheap dance program there on saturday's at gardiners ave. you just have to live in levittown (i think). so many things.
however, the school districts i was told were crappy. even though i went there and am doing okay in life, i will put my kids through them too !!

I am in total agreement, but if you talk to realtors, they say "you want to be in wantagh school district." i have even been told to go to the island trees school district (which i cannot believe, but don't know better).
I went to salk / macarthur, and as i said, i did just fine . . . my kids will be going to gardiners.
what do realtors know anyway?
(Kidding... i am going to have all the realtors on here yelling at me)

Yeah some realtors will tell you that. Also when we moved from our apartment in bellmore, a few of the companies that I called up asked why we would move to Levittown from Bellmore. I think it is so rude that people would say something about a town when they know nothing at all about the town
