my mom lives 10 mins away and sees DD almost EVERY day - even if its for 30 mins. unfortunately, my in laws live 1hour+ and we dont see them as often. however, they're both equally capable of taking care of. each has their own forte - my mom has a "busier" household and works so i dont' feel she always devotes as much "quality" time to DD which worries me when i need to leave DC there and makes me feel guilty because i'm giving my mom more "work" to do.
bottom line - i'm a worrier and never feel anyone can take care of my baby as well as DH and I

We won't leave my children with my MIL other than the time it takes to run to the bathroom. She sees nothing wrong with holding our children and holding a cigarette with the other hand.

my MIL and mom both babysit DS. I prefer my Mom she takes really really really good care of Milan. She bathes him for me if i get hom late. She combs his hair, feeds him well, everything. My MIL is a very busy woman as she runs her own business and sometimes i know when Milan is in her care she is working on some of her business stuff. Plus she doesnt give him a bath for me or comb his hair or anything like that. She is the type to put anything on him whether it be matching or not. They both are great with him but I rather my Mom. :)

no difference at all. My son spends much more time with MIL so I'm willing to bet he prefers her. But I'd trust both just the same.

Both my mom and MIL are the same. They treat DS like gold and are both 'extensions' of me I would say. My MIL lives downstairs from me and my mom lives 2 miles away so they both ALWAYS see him and knwo how to take care of him as well as I do.

no different in that they both take great care of Dd. But my mom watches the baby and thats it. my MIL can get a little distrated.

My mom hands down is the better one, even DH would agree. She plays with DDs, teachs them, reads to them but most of all she has structure and disipline when watching them. When ILs watch DDs they let them run wild basically and eat and do whatever they want with no structure at all. Even after I talk to them nothing changes, I think they think DDs will love them more if they always give them their way which couldnt be further from the truth. Although I will give them credit for getting down on the floor to play and interact.
I do trust both of them to watch DDs as I know they are well cared for, just prefer my mom

they are both great, however, my nephew is ALWAYS there when MIL watches DS.....sometimes I feel like he will never be #1................

YES!!! My Mom is wonderful with her but also manages to cook and clean. My MIL leaves more of a mess...she never cleans or cooks.

My mom spends more time with Joseph, but I would trust either one of them with him. MIL was a great mother to her children, and my mom was a wonderful mom as well, so it's pretty much a good situation either way.

My mom passed away. BUT she babysat my kids everyday when they were babies. She wanted to do it and she was a great caregiver.
The difference between my mom and my MIL is that my MIL never had the energy or - honestly - the desire to see my kids for any length of time. So babysitting never happened. They are 4&7 and she still hasn't ever babysat them.
ETA: She watched my SIL's child most of his life and continues to do so. SIL recently had another baby and MIL suddenly has plenty of energy to watch the new baby.

Totally.
My mom is a medical professional and can handle just about anything.
My MIL is an accountant and is terrible in a crisis.
My mom knows her (my) boundaries.
My MIL oversteps.
My mom will watch him no matter what.
My MIL "doesn't do sick". 
Plus my mom is about 6 years younger, and I think that makes a big difference.

both are great with ds. mil actually runs a pre-school, so she is naturally great with kids. my mom is great with ds because she's my mom

My MIL is way too frail to handle my DD. But my DD loves being with them both. My Mom has watched her no problem.

My mom is not well physically so I prefer my IL's watch dd...my mom lives in another state anyway so it is a non-issue

My mom (and dad) are wonderful and are always around. My mom is also my "back up" when DS is sick and can't go to daycare.
My MIL lives in Florida and hasn't seen Christopher in about a year..'nuf said
