A little Sunny update-AKA-Big news on "the farm" chicken related-2008
So most of you already know I have pet chickens, all female no roosters so we can't make baby chicks. Some female chickens have a very strong maternal instinct & they go "broody" meaning they sit on whatever eggs they can or even an empty nest trying to hatch out chicks. One of my hens Sunny(she was sick over the winter) has gone broody & I decided to buy some fertile eggs for her & see if she can hatch them. She puffs herself up like a beachball to scare away predators
So these are the three eggs I gave her

I gave them to her tonight, it takes 21 days so I'll be posting updates of her progress.

I think it's very cool that you can buy fertile eggs for a chicken. So she's sort of like a serrogate mom!
  Definitely keep us posted!!!

That's very cool!
  I am curious what happens.
Now stupid question, but I forget from biology class...
How do the eggs get fertilized? I just can't figure this out right now, brain freeze.

Re: Big news on "the farm" chicken related
roosters & hens have sex, the clutch of eggs that is in the chickens reproductive tract will be fertile when they are laid. Lots of people that have more chickens & roosters sell the fertile eggs on an ebay-esque website called eggbid because many chickens are willing to be surrogate Moms and lots of people use incubators. I've seen chickens caring for baby ducks, turkeys, quails. A really maternal chicken will hatch out & care for almost any egg.

YAY! Sunny will be a mommy!
Will the other chickens be jealous when she has chicks? Do they all help 'raise' the chicks?

unfortunately chickens don't believe it takes a village, I will create a nursery for Sunny & her chicks when they hatch. I'll need to monitor her behavior to make sure she plans on keeping them safe. Some hens become too aggressive & harm the chicks. The other girls won't be allowed to really interact with the babies until they are about 8 weeks old, even then we'll have to be careful that the babies don't get bullied. Sunny will probably defend them for about the first 6 weeks, then she'll look to get back into the flock. The pecking order is a very serious thing to them, and the babies will have to work their way in. If Sunny hatches chicks that turn out to be roosters I'll be giving them to a friend, and all three eggs may not hatch so its all up in the air how many babies we'll actually have.

Ok, I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know chickens had sex!!
Don't ask me how I thought the eggs were fertilized, I really have NO idea!

Re: Big news on "the farm" chicken related
so its been four days & Sunny is still on her eggs! DH built her a new nest box yesterday because the other girls kept bothering her but she likes the nest she was in. Some time next week we'll candle the eggs to see if they've started to incubate!

its a way to see if the incubation is working & if the baby is in there, sort of like a chicken egg sonogram. here's a link that shows it

Re: Big news on "the farm" chicken related
update 5/21 It has been a week & Sunny is still sitting on her eggs. I take her off twice a day to make sure she eats & drinks. She is getting skinny so I'm going to start making her special meals. She is very determined to be a Mommy. We are going to try candling this weekend when DSD is here with her friends, I'll post pics!
UPDATE~~~~~~ I just went out to take her off the nest & There were only two eggs in her nest, I noticed the third was stuck to her, when I tried to pull it away it broke there was the tiniest sign of life in there So now we've only got two eggs left, I'm so sad, I can't believe I broke one of the eggs
