HSG test

Has anyone had this done? My GYN just suggested I have an HSG . I am really anxious about this test for some reason. It sounds invasive and painful. She explained that this test would check for a blocked tube. What would cause a tube to become blocked? What other things could be determined from this test? Thanks.

Re: HSG test

For me it wasn't painful, but more uncomfortable. It's a fairly quick test (from start to finish it was maybe 5 minutes). I had AF like cramps while it was being done, and they lasted maybe an hour after that. If you take two advil/motrin before hand you should be fine. It's an important test IMO if you have been TTC with no results.

Re: HSG test

thanks. 5 minutes doesn't sound so bad. I will definitely remember to take some motrin before.

Re: HSG test

Mine was only slightly uncomfortable. Taking 2 motrin/advil about 1/2 hr before the procedure will help.

good luck!

I had one and it was not painful at all. I did pop a few advil that morning, but I also think the dr. who did it was amazing and made it so quick and painless. It is worth getting done, as it rules out issues w/ tube blockage. I ended up getting pg within 2 months after doing it!! Good luck.

Re: HSG test

Mine was uncomfortable, but not painful at all. I didn't even have any cramping. The worst part was having the speculum up in there while they radiologist went to go check the xray.

I took 3 advil before hand.

Same here. Was not a good experience at all, but I will agree it is over rather quick.

Me too. I didn't have much cramping afterwards at all. It was just the actual procedure that was painful. But only like 3 minutes.

My RE wants me to get one also and I am so scared. I will pop Advil beforehand and just wing it I guess!

Re: HSG test

Mine wasn't as bad as I imagined it would be. Very quick and not painful. But when the dye went in, I got really bad cramps but it was over quick, thankfully.

It's a very quick test. I took some pain killers before hand and had no problem at all. The anticipation is way worse than the test.

Is an HSG the only way to find out if you have blocked tubes or can they find out through an ultra sound?

And if you do have blocked tubes does that mean you have to go the IVF route?

I think I may have to have this all done in September.

TIA!

The HSG is the only test I know of to check the tubes. If both tubes are blocked then usually IVF is recommended.

Re: HSG test

Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences. I appreciate it. I feel so much better knowing that the test is short.

Thanks for posting this. Blocked tubes are my fear. Its good to know that IVF is still possible if that is the case.
