If You Were Me

I'm 41..old..really old..but we're trying. Not super aggressively and calculated but giving it more than a half azzed shot..

I don't know whether I should involve more aggressive means to get PG. Maybe get to a RE or a high risk doc or something to get me more fertile or test DH so we don't waste time..

I just don't know if I should go that route..

it would help if we really were a slave to the chart and such but we're not right now as much as we try..

There is nothing to indicate that I will have a problem..I O I get AF on time every month.

I guess, I don't want to waste another 6 months and get deeper into the age problem.

I know many people have babies in their 40's and we waited..possibly too long, but I'm not giving up.

Are there blood tests or other types of tests we could get done to give us an idea if we will have issues?

Should I just chat with my gyno about it?

I would start with talking to my gyno. I think she/he would be the best able to determine how agressive you need to be.

I'd start with your ob/gyn and go from there. When I started TTC for #2, I was the same way, just very lax, not taking it too seriously. Yes, well a year and 3 months later, I SERIOUSLY regret not taking it more seriously when I started, which would have cut out a LOT of wasted time

Make an appointment with your ob/gyn and go through the bloodwork first and make sure everything looks good. If nothing else, it will give you peace of mind.

I would definitely talk to my OBGYN and have her run some blood work. There could be one little thing off that you can easily fix.

First of all , your NOT old . Thats silly. Havent you heard 40 is the new 30 , & 40 is the new 40 !!!

Im 37 , right behind ya , I would just make a appt with the gyno & discuss that your possiblly lookin to ttc.. He or she will tell you where to go from there .

You are not to old!!!! I know several people who were 38 to their early forties and had successful pregancies!
Go to your OB. How long have you been trying for?

If I were you, I would see an RE right away if your insurance will let you do that. Don't waste time with your gyno.

I'm going to have an unpopular view- but you asked.

At 41, if you truly want a baby, I wouldn't be wasting anymore time. Yes, 41 isn't considered "old" by any means when it comes to quality of life. BUT- it IS considered old (I hate that word) when trying TTC, especially #1 (since you don't have a previous pg, you don't have any prior knowledge whether you are able to or not). That's a sad fact. OF COURSE women do it naturally all the time- but I wouldn't waste any time trying to find out.

You mentioned you know you O- but you don't chart and you haven't had any blood work done. Sadly, MANY women get regular periods, but don't actually O.

I agree with the PP. If your insurance will allow you to- you should go right to a RE who will know EXACTLY what course of action to take with an older patient.

I agree--- I would seek out an RE. They'll know what tests need to be done and the best way to proceed from there, no matter what the outcome of the tests... GL!

I think i'll give it 2-3 more months of seriously trying and timing. I will talk to my gyn and get some advice.

I really don't think I've timed it right most months..kind of a mindless way to go about it but if I do the math I may have better luck.

You also might want to try OPK's some people O around day 11 and some around 16 - I personally have had both...so those really take the guess work out of it!

I am going to have to agree with some of the previous posters who are encouraging you to see a RE ASAP! I would not waste too much time trying on your own. The unfortunate truth is that our reproductive organs are in their prime condition in our twenties and fertility declines significantly after 35. I wish more women were aware of this. Don't be mislead by all the celebs getting pg in their 40's. Many of them go through extensive and elaborate fertility treatments to get their babies. Best of luck!

I think I would see an RE as well. Honestly, if your insurance will cover it, you are better safe than sorry. They can do the appropriate tests & if all comes back clear, then great. If they spot a problem, it's so much better to know about it now so you can work to correct it instead of wasting more time.

From just doing a lot of recent research, and if you don't need a referral, I would start with an RE. They can do all the tests and are better equipped to pinpoint a problem, and the solution.

April 29. I see my gyn on April 25.

You're not too old. My Aunt was 42 when she had her son(this was her first child). I agree with the above posts about seeing an RE. It really can't hurt and at worst put your mind at ease. Good luck!
