Radiant Heating

We're having the kitchen, dining room and hallway totally redone and were thinkging about radiant heat. We wouldn't do it for the dining room since it's going to be hard wood, but for kitchen and hallway (tile).

Does anyone have radiant heat and if so what do youthink about it? TIA>...

Re: Radiant Heating

We don't have it yet but have been speaking with a few contractors and all of them said it is fine to put it under hardwoods (our entire house is hardwood).

My co-worker has it and loves it.

Re: Radiant Heating

my parents have it & LOVE it. It really keeps the floors so warm in the winter. Plus they find it to heat the house a lot quicker & more efficiently....

We just installed it in our master bathroom and it's great!

When we do our additions (kitchen & master suite), we're probably have it installed there as well.

DH has installed it in numerous homes-most of the hamptons homes have it in the bathrooms.
Its very effecient & absolutely worth the expense. It a warm, clean, not too dry, even heat.
We plan to do it in our kitchen, great room & Master bath when we re-do the floors.

Re: Radiant Heating

my parents have it in their kitchen and den. we love it.

my friends have it throughout i think the entire first floor and they love it.

it is wonderful, you dont need slippers!!! it just gives the house a nice cozy feeling.

when we redo our floors we are going to put radiant heating everywhere!

it is expensive, but worth it. plus, dh knows how to install it himself so we will save $$$ on labor!

Re: Radiant Heating

We have it in our kitchen and 1/2 bath and LOVE it. Keeps your feet nice and toasty in the winter and also helps warm up both rooms nicely.

Re: Radiant Heating

we have radiant heat on our entire 1st floor and also our 2nd floor bathrooms and LOVE it!
It gives such a cozy feel to the house-esp when you have tile floors which has a cold effect-not just temp wise, but look-wise!

Re: Radiant Heating

We are in the process of intalling it in our bathrooms.

We have wood floors throughout the house, and were told by many many people that yes its possible to put under wood but the wood could warp over time from the expansion and contraction from the heat

That's why we aren't doing it in the dining room, and also because there would be a rise, and we want to keep the floors even.

Thanks so much for the great feedback!

We'd still have to do the mud and that would raise the floor about a half inch, and we don't want that between the dining room and the other rooms - but thanks for the info!

Is putting in the pex hose do able for ordinary people? I'd love to have radiant in my bathrooms but hear it's very expensive to have installed. I may be putting in a combination geothermal system that would allow me to have both hot air heat and radiant.

There's also an electric mat version that is very DIY, especially for smaller areas. It gets embedded in the standard mastic base, so you aren't increasing the height of the floor.
