Re: just wondering... HOW IS THE BAD ECONOMY AFFECTING YOU?

We haven't seen any major impact on our salaries YET... but my husband is an electrician and we are very concerned that come June he will be out of work. It is a scary proposition because overy 400 men in his union are currently out of work - some have been out of work for over a YEAR. So we have to be prepared for the idea that Rob might have to get a temporary job that pays far less than what he gets now... just to SURVIVE.
Many life decisions have been made based partly on the shaky economy and my husband's less than stellar job prospects in the coming year.
For example - we have written off the idea of having a 3rd child, we have decided that we will not be starting any of the home improvement projects we had budgeted out for, we have opted to forgo the travel plans we had for this summer.
Minor things too... we don't eat out or order out with half the frequency that we used to. I don't entertain as often as I had been. I am very conservative with our own foods at home - pasta, chili, tacos and chicken cutlets win out over steak and roasts.
We have been socking away every extra bit of cash to make certain that we will not have too much of a crisis on our hands.
Right now things are fine. We are both working and making a decent living... but the knowledge that everything can turn on a dime has us preparing for the possible consequences before we are stuck.
Kudos to you for planning, I think that is problem with today's ecnomy-so many people are used to living like rock stars they are not slowing down. Still running up debt & eating out & burying themselves to keep up the show. I have a feeling its going to get really ugly for some people.

Re: just wondering... HOW IS THE BAD ECONOMY AFFECTING YOU?
DH and i spend a lot less than we used to on "stuff", and we are a lot more conservative when we go grocery shopping. i'm trying to convince him to use mass transit, but the reality is the price of a monthly LIRR ticket is about the same as what we pay for gas each month.

Re: just wondering... HOW IS THE BAD ECONOMY AFFECTING YOU?
Thankfully it really hasn't affected us at all. My DH was extremely lucky to be promoted last year and just recently he got his bonus and raise for this year I start PT babysitting today. My car will be used a lot less and the double stroller will come in handy, especially this week with the weather forecast.

Unfortunately both DH and I work in finance. With the market conditions the way they are, there is definately an affect on business.
We are just being a lot more conservative and not buying anything extra right now.

Fortunately for us, nothing has changed. Of course, DH & I have always been conservative in what we spent & try to curb the "unnecessary" spending.

Actually, things are starting to look up a bit (for now) because of the new Tanger going up and many schools do their renovations over the summer...I'm scared about what's going to happen next winter- this winter was rough and I can only imagine that next year will be worse

This economy works in my DH's favor. Retailers feeling the pinch are more likely to look to other vendors for more options, giving my DH more opportunities to do business.

Re: just wondering... HOW IS THE BAD ECONOMY AFFECTING YOU?
It has actually helped us. Because the real estate market is suffering, housing prices dropped, along with interest rates, and now there is a real market for rental properties. Dh and I finally took the plunge and purchased an investment property that we're going to rent out to students, close to a local University.
Other than that, we haven't really made many adjustments. We never lived extravagently before, so there isn't much we could change anyway.

Re: just wondering... HOW IS THE BAD ECONOMY AFFECTING YOU?
We are very lucky and are probably somewhat immune to economic shifts. We both have Federal jobs that we can't lose, we only drive on weekends, and live extremely cheaply to begin with.
I guess the biggest impact is the increase in airfare to go visit my family once a month on LI. It's almost doubled We might switch to driving...

It hasn't affected us at all. Everything is the same for us.
ditto for us. In fact, DH's business is getting better. This year has already been better than the entire 2007 combined.

Same for us, FH's business is doing exceptionally well, every year it has grown tremendously.
I go out to eat alot, and one thing that surprises me, is if the economy is so bad, why are all these people out to eat.
Everywhere i go, there are LONG lines, and reservations only. I waited 40 minutes yesterday for sunday brunch.

For DH & I, it means that we might actually be able to buy a house! With the drop in real estate market & the lower interest rates, it brings prices down to a more affordable level for us. If those two things hadn't changed, it would not be a possibility for us for a long, long, long time ... and we probably would have needed to move out of NY.
Same here. We looked last year and hated everything in our budget. We just started looking again and it's so much more encouraging.

Re: just wondering... HOW IS THE BAD ECONOMY AFFECTING YOU?
I got let go December 7th... I was making a pretty good salary. Now i'm working 3 days a week and making way less then I was. On top of it, I am driving from NJ to LI to work the 3 days a week with my dad so half of my salary goes to commutation. I've been watching our spending and been very very careful with our grocery shopping- making a menu and list and not deviating from it.

The price of oil is starting to annoy me. But overall it hasn't taken a hit on my life yet because we still make way more than we spend.

Nothing has really changed for us. DH's OT has slowed down a lot but that usually happens at the beginning of the year for him.

Re: just wondering... HOW IS THE BAD ECONOMY AFFECTING YOU?
my business has slowed down a bit (appraisals), but I welcome the change now that I have Ella and another on the way. I don't want to work that much anyway
It hasn't affected our daily life or spending habits.
