Jury Duty- anyone ever have in Jamacia Queens?

What can I expect?

I have never been called before- I was a telephone stand by and I have to go in monday

I can NOT get picked- I have 2 major trade shows back to back and this will be a diaster if I get on a jury

I am so stressed about this- I have so much work already- missing just one day is going to set me back

any tips?

TIA

I remember a woman had a vacation planned, and she brought in her plane ticket to show she'd really be away.

Don't know if your show is out of town.

Maybe a letter from your boss?

Good Luck!

I had to go to Jamaica, but it was like 10 years ago. Not the best neighborhood, but at least you can take the train. The last time I had jury duty, it was only for one day. If you don't get picked for a jury, you were dismissed for however many years. If you do get picked, you can try explaining why it would be difficult for you to serve on a trial, it will probably work.

I did one day at civil court in Jamaica this summer. It wasn't bad at all. They have computers in the waiting area and you can use your cell phone in designated areas.

Hopefully you'll only have to serve one day.

I had to go and sat there all day. They finally called my number and when I went to the room the case was explained and they started questioning people. Then it was time to go home. I didnt get called for questioning but still had to report the next day. When I went in the next day the case had settled over night and everyone was dismissed.

You may be able to call to get out of it. But the way standby works is you get a number, and you have to call every night for a week, and every day they say who needs to come the next day "Jurors 199-300" or something, if your number doesn't get called, you don't have to go, but chances are good that even if you do get called it won't be Monday or Tuesday. If you're standnby it's for the entire week

don't drive... the parking is horrendous. Its easier to use the buses...

It wasnt bad. Just bring a book and your laptop... most of the time is spent waiting.

It's been my experience that they could really care less what you have going on at work. Last time I got called, there were some people who were self-employed who were livid. And I know how much worse that is, since my husband is self-employed and it pretty much WOULD be a disaster if he got stuck with a few days of jury duty.

sutphin?

Just spent two days there. I was on telephone standby from last friday and then when I called wed. I had to go in on Thursday. I was excused from one panel and then 345 I got called up for another one so I had to come back again yesterday, but thankfully due to the weather it was pretty dead there and I was excused from the second panel about 30minutes after when it was myturn to get questioned. so at about 1245 right before they break for lunch I got dismissed and don't have to serve again for 6 years now.

All in all it wasn't "awful" but not great either. I brought my laptop with me Thursday so the time I spent downstairs I was online (they provide free wireless) and then yesterday I just talked to some guys who were also excused from the panel until they let us all go.

Beth - it is my opinion that if you really don't want to serve, you won't. the last thing a lawyer wants in the jury box is a disgruntled juror.

I have served twice on a jury. The one case wasn't until a month later after I went to be called. They will usually ask if you have a problem with the date. If it is early enough in the day they will send you back in to the pool.

DH was there last month, he didnt want to serve either and after being interviewed for 4 jury's wasnt picked. He was there 2 days. He also said they made the waiting a much nicer experience and provide computers for you to use.

You can park there. Just park in one of the many garage lots. You will pay more (maybe $10-15?), but it isn't that bad.

I'd rather drive there than take the bus from Bayside.

really you found it scary?
I interned at a site there few blocks from courthouse in the area for a year and a halfand yet I never felt scared there. I didn't think it was as bad as people think it is. A lot of improvements have been made in that area.

The area is so not what it used to be- not bad at all. In fact, I served there in Sept 06. I went to Subway for lunch and I found the place much cleaner and the workers nicer than they are in other parts of Queens or the city. I took the bus cause it was easiest for me.

Is there anyway you can postpone going or are you mandated to go on Monday? I dont know what else to say to help you get out of it....hopefully you just dont get picked for a jury and you will be there one or 2 days and your done for (I think) 8 years.

I have been there. Not bad at all. Do not drive. You can take the bus from Bayside or take Kelly's cab.

I agree it's not scary at all. What's so scary about it?

Anyway, sorry Beth, but I always get called to LIC, which is a good thing since it's 5 minutes from homeChat Icon

Hope you don't get picked. Just tell them that you really don't want to serve. Or that you have a problem with the case.

I never once felt scared there, even after things I heard about it, and there were times I'd be there after 7pm and walk several blocks to get to the train and was fine.
In the last year and a half I volunteered at a site there I saw constant updates and improvements to the area and there are still new stores, banks, food options opening there.
