Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion
I think rosary beads are different from wearing a crucifix or cross charm. I may be old school but I dont think rosary beads are meant to be worn as a fashion.

Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion
To each his/her own. It's not my thing.
I don't care what others wear as fashion statements as long as it's not a symbol of hate. I realize that they have ever legal right to wear anything they want but it doesn't make me want to kick them in the shins any less.

Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion
not a fan. JMO but the point of them is to use in prayer... so why would someone be walking around w/ them around their neck? It would be like taking a pot off the stove and sticking a rope thru it to wear around your neck... Again, JMO- but to each their own...

Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion
if they're just wearing them around their neck "just because" - i don't think i'd be too bothered by it.
maybe if i prayed the rosary religiously i'd feel differently.
however, if someone had the beads coming out of their nose, then clipped to their ear, then i think it would be offensive.

Totally bothers me. It's a sacrilege. I can't imagine anyone who wears them as a necklace actually uses them to pray with.

It bothers me, but doesn't really offend me. They are not meant to be worn as necklaces, but at this point people will do anything to seem "different or outrageous". I would never do it - but that's just me.

Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion
Is it possible they are using them during the day to pray on?
I know some people wear buddhist meditation beads as a necklace or bracelet, but they meditate with them during the day as well...

At least for Catholics, it's considered a sacrilege to wear them like that, so someone who uses them to pray would not wear it as a necklace.

This isn't true. It's technically not forbidden, as long as it is done with respect and with the right intentions. I think, however, that often the people wearing them as necklaces aren't using them for their intended purpose, prayer (or they're just trying to "showy" in their piety, which I find beyond annoying). Then again, in many areas, priests wear them attached to their belts (most Dominican priests do this...), so certainly it's not always done for the wrong reasons.
I'm not even that religious, but I am really not a fan of wearing the rosary as a necklace. When I was in Catholic school, we were NOT allowed to wear them as necklaces. It's not forbidden, though, so if you're doing it for the right reasons, then go ahead. I won't stop you or think that long and hard about it when I see you...
I disagree that it's like wearing a crucifix or a charm of Jesus' head -- unless your crucifix or charm is enormous. I think a rosary stands out a lot more than a small crucifix/cross/charm on a chain and most of the time (not all) is used to draw attention. (Yes, I feel the same way about the large crucifix/charm necklaces as well.) A crucifix or charm also doesn't have a different intended purpose. If it's a small, daily reminder to YOU of your faith that also happens to be an outward symbol of that faith, fine... but if it's mainly for the purpose of being showy, I think it's just wrong.
I also generally don't like when people hang them from their rearview mirror. I think that's almost more like turning them into a superstitious "luck" object than using them for prayer or as a reminder of one's faith. But again, I'm sure many people who do this don't intend it that way, so who am I to judge who has the right intentions and who has the wrong ones just from seeing them there. I think it all boils down to one's intent -- Then again, I think if your intent is a reminder of God / your faith / prayer, it doesn't need to be hanging from your neck or rearview mirror...
I still think if you want to have a rosary with you all the time, put it in your pocket or purse and take it out when you want to use it for prayer.

Honestly I've never heard that. Every religious ed class I took told us it was a sacrilege.
I still think it's extremely disrespectful.

It is a sacrilege to mistreat a holy object such as the rosary. There is no specific rule against wearing them outwardly, so long as your intentions and actions are appropriate. There are many orders of priests and nuns who do wear the rosary outwardly, so it's clearly NOT forbidden, so long as the intentions are right. I went to Catholic school from Kindergarten through 12th grade (save 7th and 8th grade where I took religious ed)... We were never allowed to wear them as jewelry ever either -- BUT it's not sacreligious if done with the right intentions. I think we're told that in school because 99% of people who want to wear them as jewelry (especially kids) aren't doing it with the right intentions (or even close). So, most of the time, it IS a sacrilege... but who am I to judge who is and isn't doing it with the right intentions?
ETA -- I also think that a LOT of people wearing rosary beads as necklaces are NOT members of religions that use rosary beads for prayer, and I find that beyond disrespectful.

Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion
It was always my understanding that you aren't supposed to wear rosary beads around your neck... they are to be carried and used only in prayer.
It doesn't really bother me or offend me.. I just think it looks kinda dumb. I do not think it's the same, in any capacity, as wearing a crucifix... I wear one every day.

Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion
My Grandmother was the most religious person I knew, went Church every single week, and when she got sick watched mass on TV. She prayed 3 times a day. She wore a 14k gold rosary necklace around her neck until the day she died in Sept. Those were NOT the rosary she prayed with, she had others that she said her prayers with. I do not thing there is anything at all wrong with this, nor do I think she was stopped at heaven's gate cause it is "forbidden" I don't think she was being disrespectful to anyone.
I think it is just a mtter of opinion!

Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion
hmm i don't know - i've seen the little old italian lady who goes to church like seven days a week wearing one and i think "aww cute" b/c she is so into her faith and i dunno - that's cute. THEN, i see the SHMUCK in a club wearing it with some TIGHT armani t-shirt with his hair full of gel commenting on some girl's fake boobs.
i would not wear one as fashion but there is a difference, to me, between the two types of people mentioned above and WHY they wear it. i had one around my bo-k when i got married - that was important to me.

Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion
From Wikipedia -
Rosaries or rosary-like necklaces are often worn for non-religious purposes as a fashion or jewelry item, and are sold in different variations in popular jewelry and clothing stores. Such ornamental use, especially the wearing of a rosary around the neck, was heavily popularized by singer Madonna in the early 1980s and has experienced a come-back in recent years. Wearing a rosary around the neck can be considered disrespectful if the person wearing it doesn't affiliate with the Christian religion. Ornate or medieval-style rosary sets are occasionally featured in goth fashion, particularly among romantic Goths or for ironic contrast to an otherwise dark outfit.
Wearing of a Rosary that one actually uses to pray is neither uncommon nor sacrilegious in various Catholic-adherent cultures, and was a common practice in the Medieval and Renaissance periods, particularly among monastics (monks and nuns). Rosaries are also worn hanging from or looped over a belt, particularly with some religious habits, pinned to and hanging from a shoulder or neckline, or wrapped around a wrist or arm as a bracelet. Some Christians feel that it is sacrilegious for a non-believer to wear a rosary around the neck. Previously the Roman Catholic Church after Vatican II Council has stated that wearing of the rosary around the neck by both Christian believers and non-believers is very disrespectful,[citation needed] although many saints have worn their Rosary around the neck, and in the Secret of the Rosary, it is mentioned that a person put his rosary round his neck to keep devils away from him.

I also think that a LOT of people wearing rosary beads as necklaces are NOT members of religions that use rosary beads for prayer, and I find that beyond disrespectful. This is what bothers me about it. I mean I believe art is where you find it, and everyone has a right to free expression, but I think that some people take it so lightly that they are not aware that they are offending someone's beliefs.
I was in a tattoo shop several years ago, and someone wanted a tattoo of rosary beads around their neck. The artist refused to do it saying it was a sacrelige. The guy who wanted it said that was the point, and a whole theological argument ensued. At any rate, I always wonder if people are more concerned about their being offended or if they think they are protecting/saving the other person, KWIM?
