Re: Your opinions please -
I dont think it is an issue if you have a drink every day with dinner. In some cultures thats just the way it is. But if one cannot function without it, there may be a dependence issue and that is a problem.

I wouldn't think so, but I guess I would need to have more background info before making a decision.

yes, by definition, they are an alcoholic:
Alcoholic: A person who drinks alcoholic substances habitually and to excess or who suffers from alcoholism.
I don't agree that one or two drinks a day is an alcoholic. I believe once it starts interfering with your life, then that is a true alcoholic.

No, in order to be an alcoholic, it has to negatively interfere with your job and relationships. Alcoholics have to have a drink, they have a physical and emotional dependency on alcohol. .
I agree with this.

Re: Your opinions please -
Having a drink or two every day, no I don't think it makes you an alcoholic. NEEDING to drink several drinks a day does. I DON'T think that being able to function despite drinking heavily on a daily basis means that you are NOT an alcoholic though. People that do this are called "functioning alcoholics." I'm not basing this on any research or scientific fact that I know of, but in my personal opinion, it just means these people may be able to hide it better.

If just by having a drink everyday makes you an alcoholic, then Europe is a continent of alkies.
A drink everyday - no. Drinking to excess everyday - yes.

No, I think an alcoholic is someone who has lost control and must have a drink to physically get through the day.

Re: Your opinions please -
pattern drinking is technically supposed to mean you are an alcoholic. So, if I have wine with dinner nightly at 6, I am one. Do I really believe that? No! Do I enjoy a glass every night? yes! Am I in control of it? Most certainly. I do not drink to get drunk....it helps me relax and red wine is full of antioxidants and resveratrol. Now, maybe if I spiked my coffee with vodka to start the day, there would be some issues...

A beer every night with dinner or a glass of wine every night to unwind does not make one an alcoholic.

Re: Your opinions please -
No. I know someone who just got trashed on weekends. She's an alcoholic (well, now non-drinking alcoholic thanks to AA). I know someone who stops drinking for months at a time, but he is definitely an alcoholic. Not one day goes by during that month that he's looking forward to getting that same effect from drinking.
An alcoholic is someone drinks to excess.
I think this best describes it:

WebMD -
Alcoholism, also known as alcohol dependence, is a disease that includes the following four symptoms:
Craving--A strong need, or urge, to drink. Loss of control--Not being able to stop drinking once drinking has begun. Physical dependence--Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety after stopping drinking. Tolerance--The need to drink greater amounts of alcohol to get "high."

Re: Your opinions please -
I think that if someone can't go a day without drinking, then they are addicted and dependent on alcohol and are an alcoholic.
But if someone drinks a glass of wine a day with dinner or so, but can skip a day or two (its more like a habit than a need) then they are not addicted and dependent on alcohol so they are not an alcoholic.

yes, by definition, they are an alcoholic:
Alcoholic: A person who drinks alcoholic substances habitually and to excess or who suffers from alcoholism.
that definition doesn't mean that they are.. it says that they have to drink habitually AND excessively.
i don't think so. i think it depends more on the NEED to consume alcohol than how often they do so (don't those health studies say something about having a glass of wine every night?)
ITA! If someone has a drink with dinner every night, IMO that doesn't make them an alcoholic. Unless it is excessive and something that they feel they NEED to get through day to day life, then that it a different story.

I don't think having a glass of wine every night with dinner makes you an alchy.
I think if you CAN'T skip it for one night...if you NEED it...then perhaps yes.
if you wake up in the mornng to an irish coffee, have a martini at lunch and a jack n coke for dinner, you are in trouble.

I think that if someone can't go a day without drinking, then they are addicted and dependent on alcohol and are an alcoholic.
This is how I feel too, but now that I'm looking at the definitions... I wonder if you can have an alcohol addiction without being a textbook "alcoholic"?
The definition of alcoholism says drinking to excess, not being able to stop with one, drinking interfering with your life, etc. But what if you have just one or two drinks every day, don't get drunk, but really are dependent on it and have trouble handling a day without any alcohol? By definition, you're not an alcoholic. It may not interfere with your life in a bad way, you may not be getting wasted every night, but feeling like you NEED to have something is an addiction, just like some people have a caffeine addiction.
If you CAN easily go without drinking, but still have a drink pretty much every day because you enjoy it, traditionally have it with dinner, etc. - that's not alcoholism or addictive behavior at all IMO.

well, that's the thing - everyone is different.
i guess it is too general of a question...
i know people who do that and are fine - b/c they can, from time to time, skip a day and are totally OK. i know a girl who works CRAZY late hours sometimes - so, she can't be home for her nightly glass of wine with dinner - but that doesn't mean she gets all worked up over it - she just skips it - i don't even think it crosses her mind.
BUT then again i know someone who - well, i don't think he can recall a day where he has not drank - meaning, it has been so long i don't think he can even remember the last day he went without drinking i've never seen him without a drink - we go places and no matter where we are, what time it is - he has to drink something- he doesn't always get crazy although a few times (at parties) he will take the opportunity, b/c it is a party, to go overboard - but the majority of the time - it is just drink after drink - casually almost --- then, one time, just to see - at an afternoon bbq - like, 3 or 4pm in the afternoon - no biggie - just burgers and dogs lol a day in the pool - everyone left by like 8pm the latest b/c it was a sunday - i counted, yeah it was at least 12+ beers within a time period of four hours or so?? hmmm...
when i read what kevin posted - it reminds me of this person.
