Ambulance question

Okay I just started thinking about who would be in the closest proximity when I deliver and there aren't many! Does anyone know if you go into labor and have to call an ambulance - do they take you to the hospital you are supposed to go to or to the closest hospital?

Thanks!
Christine

Well I just so happen to be a paramedic...... Here( in MI) we only have 1 hospital really that delivers babie, but there is abother one not far. If everything looks good we'll try to take you when you want to go, but if at anytime you are in an emergency situation you would be taken to the closest most appropriate hospital regardless if it's your hospital or not. Re: Ambulance question

Why do you think you might need an ambulance? I live about 40-45 minutes away from the hospital I went to with DD#1 and will go to this time. Usually there is plenty of time to get there unless you have a crazy fast labor.

Re: Ambulance question

Labor, especially first timers, lasts a long time from start to finish - you should have plenty of time to get there by car. Chat Icon

My friend actually drove herself to the hospital after her water broke because her husband was in court for work!

Re: Ambulance question

Funny that you say that with my second I didn't even make it to the hospital I had her in my living room... I never had any labor pains I just had the urge to use the bathroom but I was never able to go sorry tmi... My mother then told me to call the abulance because she just felt that something was wrong when they got to the house the guy said they can see the head.... Bang few minutes later she was born... I would never make it to the hospital because it was about 40 mins away...

With my first it was another story I was in labor for 9 hour 43 mins and 23 secondsChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Ambulance question

If you are really concerned that you will be alone & are going to need to get to your hospital super quick, call a few cab companies, tell them your situation & see if you can make arrangements ahead of time (sometimes they have the manpower/cars that if they know it could happen at some point, they'll transport only you won't need to share a cab with 4 other people & make a bunch of stops).
Regarding ambulances, if you live on LI, unless something has changed, 911 ambulances will take you to the closest hospital (the 1 you live in the catchment area of), the volunteer FD emergency can take you to the hospital you request- call your FD to double check that though.

Re: Ambulance question

It depends on a few circumstances. Where do you live? (County wise)

Re: Ambulance question

You could call a private ambulance company that takes your insurance. Unless you and/or the baby are in distress then they would take you to the hospital of your choice.

Re: Ambulance question

I am an EMT here in suffolk....if you are calling us there will be some type of problem...crowning, breech birth etc....so normally we will take you to the closest hospital....but the EMT on scene will need to make that call. If you live in Yahank and were planning on delivering at Winthrop....transporting you there is not going to happen. But if you are close to the hospital of your choice it could happen....it is the EMT's call.

Here on LI there is no charge if you have an emergency ambulance (your local FD, ambulance corp) come to your home for an emergency. If you have a private ambulance (AMR, Hunter) then you would have to pay. They usually take a long time to come and are expensive.

Re: Ambulance question

Thank you for all your responses.

I did figure that there would be plenty of time, and as I get closer to my due date, I figure I would find out all the details about how close contractions are and how soon I need to get to the hospital, etc.

I just know that my husband works in Jersey city and is at least 1.5 hours to 2 hours from home. So he would probably meet me at the hospital. (Assuming I go into labor during the work day.) I was trying to explore my options incase I am alone and baby needs to be born!

Thanks again!

Re: Ambulance question

I think it depends on the ambulance that comes to you. There are ones that can only go to a specific hospital. You dont have anyone who can drive you if you go into labor? My DH was at work when i went into labor, hes a service tech for cablevision and was out on the field.. I called my sis in Mass. park and i live in East Meadow.I was already 4 mins apart at that point. My bil made it to my house and then to plainview hospital in 20 mins.. He went through red lights with his head sticking out window saying "lady having a baby".. too funny.

Needless to say i found out later my neighbor was home and said she would have driven me .. Oh well, my bil said he always wanted to drive like that (my sis was induced on all 3 kids)
