Question for women who took hubands name
It's only been 2 months, but I still don't really feel like my new name is my name, I still have to think about it when I sign my name and when introducing myself I still studder at my last name.
How long did it take you to get used to your new name and to identify yourself as Mrs. Smith instead of Ms. Jones.
I'm not at all unhappy I took my husbands name, I just don't feel like it's my name yet, if that makes sense.

Re: Question for women who took hubands name
I am a year and a half in and I still have to think about it when I write it sometimes. LOL. It's getting there though.when you start seeing your mail come in your married name, and get new credit cards, you'll get used to it.

Re: Question for women who took hubands name
It took a few months. The hardest was at work (signing my name to stuff) or writing checks. 8.5 years later, my married name sounds more like my name than my maiden name.

Re: Question for women who took hubands name
I don't have a hard time when I have to say my name, but I always "notice" it when I say it, so to speak.

Re: Question for women who took hubands name
My wedding was 2 months ago too, but I have yet to change my name (no days off remaining at work for me to go do it until 2008). However, people call me Mrs. Q all the time for short and sometimes I'm like, who? I also had to call up the insurance company and DH signed me up with my married name so when they asked me my name, I was like, ummmmmmmmm. They must have thought I was slow.
I think eventually it becomes second nature... just don't know how long "eventually" is!

Re: Question for women who took hubands name
I was ready for it the day it happened. I had been practicing ahead of time.
My Father has 3 sons to carry on his name, so I didn't feel that bad.

agreed!!!!
A few of my friends still refer to me in my maiden name...and that confuses me as well - it's identity confusion - LOL.

Re: Question for women who took hubands name
I am married 21 months & I can honestly say that my married name felt like my own from the time I changed my name. Of course I paused the first couple of times I signed in on a check but I was ready for it...

I know exactly how you feel. it's been over 2 yrs since I took his name and it still seems strange sometimes when someone says my married name out loud.

Re: Question for women who took hubands name
I'm married 5 years and my married name is finally clicking in the respect that I don't hesitate when I sign my name or when I introduce myself. It's weird now to see my maiden name on some mail I still get at my parent's house.

I hated my maiden name, so I was ready for my married one. It's very natural to me.

Re: Question for women who took hubands name
I got used to it pretty fast, but it took my parents some time. My mother (last year this happened; we'll be married three years soon) picked up contacts for me once and was upset when the woman said they weren't in. The lady was like, "Nope. Nothing by that name." Well, my mother was so embarrassed. She had given my maiden name and then gave the lady 'tude when she couldn't find them!

Re: Question for women who took hubands name
IMO once you change everything over and really start using it, it will more quickly become YOUR name.
For instance, I changed over my work, credit cards etc. And I think within 6 months I felt like it was my name. However it wasnt until probably about 2 years that it was more part of my identity than my maiden name.
Now I was signing some checks in my maiden name the other day (I only switched my personal account recently) and I actually laughed because signing my maiden name was HARD for me, I had to really think about it. I have been married 3.5 years.
Forgot, for the longest time I could sign my married but if I used initials (which I do for work alot) I always used my maiden initials...

Re: Question for women who took hubands name
The varied responces are very interesting
I think part of my problem is I love my maiden name, it's an easy, but not ultra common Irish name and I changed to a very unusual Ukranian name, which is tough to say and write - i do like that my new name is unique and I'm sure I'll get used to it
...I think i need to work on my signature though I never practiced before we got married and right now it's a mess

Re: Question for women who took hubands name
i've been married a little over a year and it definately took a couple of months. i had to remember to write my new last name like you said. it'll kick in naturally for you soon.
ETA: I think my new last name flows just as much as my maiden one so long as i don't include my middle name. when i include that it sounds all wrong.
