Re: Are you givign your infant the flu shot?
CDC's weekly update of how widespread the flu is in each state
CDC's Flu activity
CDC's FAQ on flu
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year.
Every year in the United States, on average:
* 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu; * more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and; * about 36,000 people die from flu.
Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications.
I'm leaning towards what the CDC says.... they have facts and hard numbers, research, and it's their core function.

Re: Are you givign your infant the flu shot?
During October 2, 2005 through June 24, 2006, 41 pediatric deaths have been reported to CDC from 14 states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Wyoming) and New York City. Four of the deaths reported during this time period occurred prior to the 2005-06 influenza season. Influenza-associated pediatric mortality was first made a nationally notifiable condition for the 2004-05 influenza season. Due to the length of time this system has been in place, and because state participation may vary, it is not feasible to compare the number of deaths from season-to-season.

I'm reading Dr. Sears' book on vaccines and he states that the flu kills only 50 people per year in the US.
I read this, too -- maybe this was the number of infants killed? I don't remember the exact number, but he backs it up with references -- I don't have the book with me or I would post them. His main point is that the flu is very dangerous to the elderly and immune comprised, but not as dangerous to children as many of us have been led to believe.
As for the PP who claims Dr. Sears is a wacko -- please actually read his book. It is full of information all backed up by studies.
