Crying In Middle of the Night- Question
My DS woke up last night about midnight. He normally sleeps decently through the night. He is almost 7 months old. My question is this... How long should I let him CIO before I decide to go to him? Or, how long do you ladies let your DCs cry before you go to them? Last night it took him about 20 minutes to go back to sleep, and he fussed for that entire time. Was that too long to let him cry? I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing and not being "mean mommy....." TIA for any help you can give me..........
Also, is it normal for a baby to wake up and cry out in the middle of the night for no known reason? Do any of your DCs do this? Thanks again!

Is he teething? My kids woke up from that.
I didn't do CIO so I can't answer that part for you.

He might be. He has his bottom two teeth already so he may be teething on his top gums. BUT, I can't see or feel anything yet. Could he still be teething even though I can't see or feel anything on his gums?

Definately, the tooth has to cut through quite a bit of gum before it comes in. My ped was always telling me that he could tell a tooth was cutting way before I saw the bump on the gum.

I usually give him 2 minutes to fuss and than go in and check on him. Usually he just lost his binky and once I give it to him he is ok. I usually dont let him cry longer than 5 min. and he is turning 7 months this week.

Once my DS sees me he WON'T go back to sleep. That's the problem I have with going in to check on him. And, he has never taken a paci at all so that's not an option for me either. Maybe I will just not let him fuss for as long next time. I feel horrible but he did go back to sleep and slept soundly the remainder of the night.... If something was wrong he wouldn't have gone back to sleep on his own, right?

I did the method where you check on him longer and longer every night but the crying usually lasted no longer then 20 minutes. Stick with it because at 2 and 1/2 my DS is the best sleeper and nothing wakes him up.

It depends on my DD cry. If she is just fussing I'll leave her & see if she will settle down on her own, but if its a real cry I wait about 5 minutes if she doesn't start to calm down I usually go in and check on her.

well I do not do CIO when I am putting her to bed. Once in a blue moon, she will stir in the middle of the night and cry. I will leave her for 10 minutes or so and then check on her. She usually goes right back to sleep without me having to go in there

I check because my DD is a good sleeper & there is likely something wrong to make her cry. (She is 5&1/2 months) Last night, her diaper leaked & she was soaked so she was crying @ 3am. I changed her & she went right back to sleep. Other times, she cries because she jammed herself into the corner of the crib & is "stuck", so I move her.

My DS goes down at night very easily 98% of the time, so I don't have to worry about CIO at that time. It's just in the middle of the night when he wakes up crying/fussing/whining I don't really know what to do or what I should do. It's good to know that he isn't the only DC that wakes in the middle of the night crying once in a while. I keep thinking something is wrong with him that wakes him up.....
