 Rosh Hashanah Question
I need to email a co-worker about something that requires a response either tonight or tomorrow. I know he's out today for Rosh Hashanah though and wondered whether Rosh Hashanah is a holiday where people aren't allowed to work? Just trying to figure out the likelihood that I'll get a response from him. Thanks!!

 Re: Rosh Hashanah Question
I am not Jewish so I dont celebrate....but yesterday we had to email and get a question answered from someone at work before she "shut down her electronics" for the holiday, and then today my coworker spoke to client when he stepped out of temple services to answer his cell phone!
So I personally think that people celebrate it to different degrees. Hopefully you will get a better answer from someone else!

 Re: Rosh Hashanah Question
Actually the holiday doesn't end until sundown tomorrow. And yes, Jewish people are not supposed to work during the High Holidays (you can't drive either).

 Re: Rosh Hashanah Question
Many coworkers were out today but will be in tomorrow. A few are out through Monday.
It really depends on the person. I find that the High Holy days are celebrated by even the "least" religious....kind of like me going to church on Easter but not much during the year.

 Re: Rosh Hashanah Question
Thanks everyone. I sent the email just in case he's not as observant as other people. I hope he responds because I might end up doing 5 hours of unnecessary work if he doesn't.

jews are prohibited from working on the high holy days
it really depends on your coworker's level of observance. but out of respect, i would refrain from the possibility of causing someone to work on the holidays by emailing or calling with a work related issue out of respect for their religion

ITA with this. DH & I am not religious by any means but we will not check our work email or voicemail messages on the holiday.

 Re: Rosh Hashanah Question
I believe the rules of true Sabbath observation apply to High Holy Days. That would mean no work. The term "work" is a VERY broad term for strict observers and goes way beyond "making a living." For some, they wont even get into an elevator and push a button because that is considered "work." People are not to use money either.

Thanks guys. I didn't see your posts until after I sent the email, unfortunately. I hope I didn't put him in an awkward situation. I did preface the email by saying that I wasn't sure whether he was checking email, but wanted to let him know what was going on and, if I didn't hear from him, I'd get started drafting something that we may or may not need to get drafted.
ETA: If he's really observant, I assume he won't check his work email until tomorrow night or Saturday morning anyway though, right? Just trying to figure this all out - thanks!

 Re: Rosh Hashanah Question
It depends on their level of observance. Some people work from home and answer their phones, others don't. The holiday ends at sundown tonight...I think.

 Re: Rosh Hashanah Question
well I'm at work today but only out of Jewish guilt. I worked from home Monday and had the Colonoscopy Tuesday, worked from my downtown office on Wed and took off yesterday for the holiday (even though I answered my berry) and so I wanted to show face in the office today.
Very light crew here though and DH is working from home which really made me want to stay home.

this year, when rosh hashanah ends--shabbat begins. so if he is really observant, he wont be doing any sort of work until after sundown tomorrow (sat) night.
