Do you eat healthy?

I was awatching Oprah testerday aand it got me thinking. She had Dr. Oz and another doctor on. They went through this womans refrigerator and cabinets and pulle out all the unhealthy products. (This show was a repeat).

But it made me really think about the stuff that my DH and I eat. We definetly eat alot healthier than we did before. But after yesterdays show I realized alot of the things that I thought were ok are not.

So, I'm just curious...if you eat healthy, what does your menu look like for the day..i.e. breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.

Re: Do you eat healthy?

I think I eat pretty healthy...

I am bad about eating breakfast - I almost always will have coffee (not that healthy) but I tend to eat fruit...

Lunch is either quinoa and vegetables, or veggies and hummos, maybe some pita chips... I always bring almonds with me as well.... Sometimes a soy turkey sandwich or salad

I work out in the evenings... so I eat light when I come home. I tend to have a boca burger, or just some eda mame, veggies and hummos again, or salad

I have to admit I'm not the most exciting eater, but it works for me...

I usually will have a soy ice cream bar, or sorbet for dessert after dinner

I'm a vegan, by the way...

Re: Do you eat healthy?

I generally try to avoid overly processed foods or fast food. I just switched to a vegetarian diet so my eating has undergone a complete overhaul since then. Here's my plan for today:

Breakfast:
1 ruby red grapefruit

Snack:
Sugar free peach yogurt

Lunch:
Small Caesar salad
1/4 cup of Israeli couscous with pecans and dried cranberries

Snack:
Banana

Dinner:
Boca burger with reduced fat mozzarella cheese and organic ketchup
1 1/2 cups mixed vegetables

Snack:
Skinny cow fudge bar

Re: Do you eat healthy?

For the most part, I am a healthy eater but I do indulge some on the weekends

For breakfast I am usually have Cheerios or something...Lunch is a salad with FF dressing. Dinner is almost always either chicken grilled or turkey. We eat a lot of veggies in our house!

I only drink water & on occassion I will have Crystal light Ice Tea

Re: Do you eat healthy?

Another vegan here. I think I eat pretty healthy, but there's definitely room for improvement.

Breakfast is usually a bowl of grape nuts with soy milk. I like to cut up some strawberries or another piece of fruit and throw it in there, too.

Lunch is usually salad (with all kinds of yummy stuff - beans, nuts, whatever looks good - thrown on top), PB&J, Tofurkey slices or veggies and hummos on wheat bread or in a pita or sometimes I'll make a concotion I like with mushed up chickpeas, a chopped pickle, mustard, veganise and some spices and throw it in a pita. It sounds weird, but I love it.

For snacks during the day I like fresh fruit, nuts and dried berries, healthy snack barks (Lara bars, Luna bars or Trader Joe's trail mix bars), or carrots and hummus.

Dinners vary the most common dinners are:
-Seitan/Chicken (one for me, the other for DH), potatoes (roasted or mashed) and asparagus or broccoli
-Bean burritos with salsa and tons of fresh veggies
-Homemade veggie pizza
-Veggie burgers with bean salad or fries
-Veggie & tofu stir fry with soba noodles or rice
-Punjab Choley (premade from Trader Joe's) with cous cous
-Homemade falafel (from Fantastic foods - yum!)

Desserts in our house are not so healthy, usually, because I love to bake, but we make a lot of fruit smoothies with frozen fruit, orange juice and soy milk.

ETA: Veggie sushi rolls!!

Edited again to say that we almost always have a salad with dinner.

Re: Do you eat healthy?

I think I do...

I have a gluten sensitivity/allergy, so I can't eat any bread products

I try to stick to whole natural foods

Breakfast is usually a flax seed muffin, pumpkin/cream cheese mixture, or eggs

Lunch and dinner are usually meat and veggies

I'll snack on cheese, nuts, low carb yogurt...and try to drink lots of water

Re: Do you eat healthy?

I am a firm beleiver in everything in moderation!!

I am definitely not a super healthy eater, but I try to eat plenty of fresh fruits and veggies.

I enjoy food and try not to deprive myself of anything I like. I just try to limit how much I eat of it.

Actually, the only thing I really try to avoid is artificial sweeteners.

I'm probably not so healthy although I am getting better.

DH hates processed food. Since he makes dinner it can be anything from a salad with grilled chicken to pork loin with mango salsa.

Breakfast today: Honeydew melon

Lunch: Double Veggie burger with light Laughing Cow cheese on an english muffin.

Snack: Banana & granola bar

About 2L of water.

Re: Do you eat healthy?

I eat terrbile and I really have no desire to change.
Food is a big part of my life and when I try to eat healthy I am bored to tears.
I find that I just won't eat- rather than eat the healthy choice- almost like I'd rather not eat at all then have a vege burger or a salad. And that's the honest to God truth.

However- my Dr says I am healthy as a horse for now- cholesterol, sugars etc- are all perfect.

I guess I'll enjoy it while it lasts!!!

Me too! I used to think that "eating healthy" meant "eating less calories" and I'd load up on Diet Cokes and, well, anything that said "Diet" in the name. I didn't lose weight and I felt so blah. Then I had an allergic-type reaction to all that Nutra-Sweet (long story). I switched and now I try to eat/drink less processed foods and feel so much better. Even drinking regular Coke 4 or 5 times a week I feel so much better and my waist is thinner. Go figure.

Re: Do you eat healthy?

I don't eat as healthy as I should. I love sweets and I know I have too much sugar in my diet.
I try to eat my "regular" meals healthy, but that could use improvement as well. I don't eat red meat, so thats a good thing. One thing I feel I should eat more of is fish - I don't really like it but I know it is very healthy.

Re: Do you eat healthy?

Thanks for all the responses. I wanted to get an idea of what everyone else is eating, that is eating healthy. Oprah's show just drove home the point for me about how important this is. Prevention is really better than cure. They showed a clip of someone having a heart bypass done. After seeing that I really prefer to modify my diet now than deal with a health problem later!

I will splurge sometimes and have a treat that may not be so healthy. But it won't be the norm.

Re: Do you eat healthy?

Half the time I eat healthy and half the time I eat horribly.

I only eat healthy snacks such as fruit, veggies, lo-fat yogurt, almonds, etc. And I usually bring my lunch to work, which is most often a turkey sandwich.

However, I do still eat fast food for dinner. Not nightly, but often enough for it to still be bad for me. I'm a sinner. Chat Icon

Re: Do you eat healthy?

I would say I eat healthy 80% of the time

I will add that 3 years ago today- I buried my very healthy eating Mother

she never ate red meat, drank soda, limited her sugar- ate everything you are suppose to

worked out 5 days a week at least

and she died of cancer at age 53

so take everything these experts say with a grain of salt- and when she was at MSKCC- most of the other patients- were all like her in terms of eating and excersing

Re: Do you eat healthy?

I fluctuate, but most of the time I try to eat healthy. I avoid perservatives when possible (especially MSG), and try to eat foods that are natural. I will eat cereal like cheerios and skim milk, juice, and coffee (BTW, not bad for you as long as you do not exceed 2 cups per day...has antioxidents). I usually have breakfast be my largest meal. I will snack on some fruit or yogurt before lunch. Lunch is usually turkey on whole wheat. Dinner is usually grilled chicken w/ 2 veggies. I have acquired many delicious grilled chicken recipes. I will sometimes eat enriched pasta or a lean red meat once per week to switch off.

I do not eat as many veggies as I should though, but that is because my IBS limits my choices to carrots and corn and potatos. I will splurge from time to time on sugar.

Re: Do you eat healthy?

It sound like some of the healthy eaters are not eating much at all. I'm prob coming from a different perspective though as I'm very tall and training for a marathon so my diet is very different right now.

I usually have instant oatmeal, or a yogurt and granola for breakfast and coffee.

Salad with chicken, beans and some cheddar cheese or small turkey sandwich for lunch

dinner is where it all goes down hill- now that I'm training, I eat whatever I want- pasta, pizza, rice and chicken- whatever carbs I can get in my body- especially towards the end of the week as I have my long runs on Saturday.

When I was not training, dinner was very hard. I LOVE dinner- it's when I'm the hungriest. For those that said they have a veggie burger and salad for dinner- what does your DH eat? My prob is I can deal with having that but than DH will get takeout cause I'm not cooking anything or he'll cook something amazing and I'll want that instead, hehe. I can't win- we both like eating alot!
