Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

We put down 20% with the profit from my co-op that I had bought 2.5 years before. I only put 10% down on that co-op but it was my own money. We also had a nice chunk of money left over for some renovations on our house.

Only 5% down here. Some of it came from our wedding proceeds. But we wanted to have a safe cushion as well.

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

We did it all on our own - with the money that we got as wedding gifts and then saving for one full year

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

I saved for about 4 years to put 20% down on first house. Then when I married DH,we sold that house, and used the profit to put 30% on new house (just a little bigger, not much...darn MARKET!)

No help! and we are def. just average income earners.

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

We put down 20% on our house, and it was all from us. No help from parents. They helped with some closing costs at the closing with things that "popped" up, and helped with labor in moving furniture, but that was it.

closing costs came from DH "rent" contribution to his parents that his father invested 10 years ago. Otherwise, it was all ours.

We mainly used money we received as wedding gifts to cover closing costs and 10% down. Both sets of parents gave extremely generous wedding gifts to us before the wedding.

Our parents leant us some money to cover the other 10% since we had a problem with our home equity line (we've since then paid them back).

We had help too. We put down about 37%, 3% of it was from wedding money, the rest from my parents who saved up since I was young.

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

Well our parents could not afford to "help" us out financially with our home or wedding. We saved alot of $ and put about 10% down on our house. Our parents have helped with little things, like my mom bought us our bed and my inlaws paid for our kitchen counter top...and we are very appreciative. Plus...DH is in the business and can do most of the renovations himself which saved so much $ in labor. We also have a plumber, electrician and spackler/painter in the family who help ALOT!!! So we are lucky!

We just work hard and save lots. It can be done. Its tough though.

We put 20% down and got most of that 20% from my father as a gift. There was a poll regarding this topic not too long ago on this site and most people did not get help from family.

We paid for our wedding ourselves & bought the house @ the same time.

We put down 10%.

DH'sparents did give us $5k for wedding/house whatever we wanted. That was their gift & my mom paid for 1/2 of my dress.

DH is great with saving and worked every bit of overtime he could. I also worked f/t & catered on the weekends for cash.

HI, SAME HERE!

We paid for our wedding ourselves & bought the house @ the same time.

We put down 10%.

My parents and his parents did give us $5k each also for wedding/house whatever we wanted.

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

Great topic. I also wondered not only how young couples afford a house on LI but how they could afford such expensive housing. For us we both own our own co-op and DH put down 10% for his co-op himself and I put down 5% myself (borrowed $400 from Mom for closing popup). When DH sold his co-op we have enough for a 20% downpayment for a modest house. I won't make much off my co-op since I bought it a little over a year ago. No help from our parents for the most part. Our wedding money went toward bills we had.

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

We did it all ourselves.

A lot of people do 80/20's or put down less than 20% with creative financing. Nothing wrong with that, in my book, as long as you can swing the monthly bills!

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

Depending on how long it takes us to find a house, we will be putting down between 5-10%. The longer it takes us to find a house, the more we can put down on it, so we're not in a huge rush, but at the same time, we are because we're currently staying with my parents.

ETA: Other than the fact that my parents are letting us stay with them while we house hunt, we are saving all the money on our own.

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

We financed the entire cost of the house. Down payment (20%) was in the form of a HELoC and the rest is in a 30 year fixed rate mortgage.

We paid for all the closing costs ourselves.
