Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

My IL's were a huge help. They sold us their house for less than 1/2 the market value. The money we gave them, they are giving to DH's sister so that she can buy something.

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

We paid for our wedding ourselves & bought the house @ the same time.

We put down 10%.

DH's parents did give us $5k for wedding/house whatever we wanted. That was their gift & my mom paid for 1/2 of my dress.

DH is great with saving and worked every bit of overtime he could. I also worked f/t & catered on the weekends for cash.

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

DH bought our co-op for 10% down...three years later we used the profit from that sale to put 20% down on our house. No help from either set of parents for either purchase.

ETA: My parents paid for our entire wedding.

I don't think I know anyone who had monetary help from their parents to purchase their home. Chat Icon

That's funny, almost everyone I know had help from their parents (except me!)

One friend had her in-laws help her with the downpayment for her first house; then her mom gave her $125K to help her with her second house!

DH's aunt and uncle helped his cousin buy two apartments in Hoboken.

Another friend's ILS gave them their house...completely gratis.

We are putting down 10% plus closing costs -- it is tough Chat Icon However, there is a certain satisfaction in knowing you did it yourself.

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

DH bought his first house with his Bar Mitzvah money that his parents had invested for him for 14 years at that point... it was 20% at the time.

I have been investing money since 18 (no help from Dad at all).

We paid for our own wedding.

With the equity from DH's first house and profits from my portfolio we were able to put a substantial downpayment on our current house. Even w/o the sale of the first house, we would have had 20% to put down for the purchase of a smaller house.

It does help that we are in our late thirties and well established in our careers. I don't know how people in their early twenties, graduating from college with the debt that many of them do, can even afford to think about it.Chat Icon

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

my ILs asked us if we wanted our wedding gift before the wedding (since we were paying for it ourselves) or to hold it until we bought a house. we decided to wait and used it as part of our down payment.

so no, they didn't give us money for the house because it was our wedding gift, but it was used for the house.

we put less than 10% down

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

I bought my coop in Brooklyn a while ago with no help (and no job at the time) but it was a foreclosure and nowhere near the price of coops today.

For the house we are building we put 20% down from savings and got a construction loan to build. We had no help from parents at all and no help to pay for the wedding either.

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

We put $100K at closing. We inherited money when my mother died. Without that we would have only had about 10K to put down and we probably would not have bought a house at all.

We put down $5K, and got it back at closing through a grant awarded to us by BoA.

We did 100% financing. My mom "loaned" me 1,000 bucks for closing costs and such Chat Icon

We are also doing 100% financing and my parents loaned us $6,000, incase any unexpected costs come up when we close.

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

We plan to put down 15-20%. Part of our down payment will come from wedding money, but we saved most of the money ourselves.

We put down a little over 20% - no help from parents.
I had a co-op and the sale of that helped with the down payment and renovation $$ for this house.

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

we are so blessed. DH parents paid for the whole wedding reception and gave us down payment for our coop, which was 50% of the purchase price. they mentioned that when we switch over to a house, they will help out then too. Chat Icon Chat Icon

10%.

We're paying for all of it ourselves.

Ditto that. We saved for 2 years for our 10% downpayment.

If you dont mind sharing, how much did you put down on youre house (%) and did you get any financial help from parents?

We financed 97% of our house. We paid 3% & closing costs.

We borrowed ZERO from our parents...same thing goes with our weddings, college, cars...oh I could go on & on.Chat Icon

We're planning on buying next year and plan to put down 20%, most of which we have saved and held onto from the wedding. My MIL has mentioned more than once she wants to "help" though.

Re: I hope this isnt too personal but...

We put down 20%, and when the sale of our co-op goes through, we will also put most of that into the house. So in the end, we will have paid about half of our mortgage.

Our parents didn't pay anything towards this or our wedding. The money they gave us as wedding gifts helped, but it wasn't enough for a down payment. And we're fine with that. They have their own expenses and we're grown people, we should be able to do these things ourselves.

20% down, thanks to our generous guests at our wedding and money in our savings accounts already.
