Ah. the joys of homeownership - updated with the demo pics
We got to work this weekend gutting the kitchen. It is completely gone, down to the studs, including the ceiling (in which we found nests of various small animals) We started taking the floor up, but there are 5 layers of flooring down, its a very slow process! I did take pics but I don't have my cable to connect the camera to my computer!
So the house has this smell, like pet smells, you know urine. I thought as we started doing work, taking down walls, opening windows and doors to air out the house, the smell would go away. Well it wasn't. DH went down into the utility room to clean up the stuff from the kitchen that fell in there when we opened up the wall. He decided to take a flashlight and look into the crawlspace, and what did he find in there? DOG POOP EVERYWHERE! They let their dogs go to the bathroom in the crawlspace, I mean ewww disgusting, what is wrong with people? So no we have to clean up dog sh!t and figure out a way to get the urine smell out of concrete!!
The people who lived there before us were absolute pigs. There was garbage everywhere, my parents and I spent the whole day yesterday clearing the side of the house of the shingles they left when they re-did the roof (3 layers worth!!!).
The people across the street were so happy to see us come in, they brought us bagels and let use their tools!
UPDATE:
Thanks everyone for your support in the poop situation, LOL. We bought a big jug of the nature's miracle, and we're going to the house later to clean it up. I am worried about the old linoleum on the floor having asbestos in it, so I went to home depot yesterday and bought those heavy duty ventilator masks that will protect us. DH thinks I am crazy but it gives me peace of mine... I can't believe we are gong to home depot every day and dropping $100 .
Anyway, here are the first demo pics... The ceiling is gone now too and we are working on the floor.
DH all proud of himself
My friend Jen sweeping
and here's the before pic, for reference

Is this house in N Bellmore? It sounds like a house my friends used to rent the upstairs of. The people that lived down stairs used to let their dogs go in the basement all the time and they would not clean it up. Scott

I agree - the new scented oil candles are perfect to use and work within seconds of being lit.

No, its in Centereach... I guess is not all that uncommon of a practice I don't know how people live like that!
We are going to get some of the stuff for cleaning up pet smells and then we will try some of the plug-ins! Thanks for the advice!

The best thing for pet urine is natures miracle, it takes a while for it to work about 24 hours but it is the best. I used it all the time when I was house training my puppy.

Yes, it's good. You need to let it "soak".

eww!!! so gross! i have a dog and agree with using nature's miracle- OR just plain vinegar and water.... its all natural and really helps remove odors. most of those other candles and stuff just cover up odors, but i know vinegar is really good at getting the odor out... good luck!!

Oh, I know EXACTLY what you are talking about re: the 5 layers of flooring! It must be a Centereach thing
My DH and I ripped out our kitchen when we moved in also. If you need any help we'll gladly come by and lend you a hand! I also know a few local contractors so if you need painters or anything, just FM me! Good luck!

Re: Ah. the joys of homeownership - updated with the demo pics
That is absolutely disgusting, I can't even imagine. You should use Nature's Miracle and/or vinegar, but honestly I would clean it with a bleach and water mixture first, because you want to make sure all that bacteria is dead. It will help with the urine smell. I have a dog run and its all rocks (OUTSIDE!) and about once a month (mind you I pick up the poop like 3 times a week) I hose it down with a outdoor bleach and water mixture, you'll know its working because when the mixture hits urine it will bubble. After that I would use Nature's Miracle.
