How are the comments/stunts that Stern and Imus make/pull different from what Oppie and Anthony did by airing that couple having sex in church? Oppie and Anthony got fired, but Stern and Imus get away with their vulgarity.

The radio station was going to lose a TON of sponsors if O&A were not fired, and although I don't agree with their being fired, the only difference is they encouraged people to perform and illegal act. I don't think that any of Imus' advertisers are threatening to pull their contracts because of this statement.

The unfortunate thing about any media is the listeners/readers only matter in relation to the advertisers...KWIM?

definitely.

There is a law against humping in a church?? Hmmm, never knew that.

We now live in a society where no one accepts an apology! Someone always wants more..get fired, get sued get hung...something.

That is my problem with what Rev Al is doing to him. Sure I don't like Imus personally so I don't lsiten. I do not, however, go around soap-boxing that he should be fired & have his livelihood taken away. Did he say something stupid? Yes. Was it illegal? No. So why is he not entitled to his opinion?Chat Icon I just don't get it. You are right, an apology does not mean anything these daysChat Icon

Re: Imus Comments on Rutgers/TN Women's Basketball Game

The only time the company takes action against things like this is if they are going to lose advertising revenue. Even when Stern said stuff that got him fined by the FCC they didn't fire him, because he had a loyal following and advertisers know that.

The O&A church stunt would have cost the station/corporation a ton of money if they hadn't been fired, IMO.

the problem is that imus hasn't figured out what type of show he wants

controversial like stern
or a serious issues show

I think it's because he's not actually alive anymore and there's a person behind him pulling strings to make his mouth move. Chat Icon

LOL I think the same thing of him!

I don't like him so I don't listen.

Makes sence... MsMBV said the same thing.

Do you think Stern would've risked losing advertisers if he pulled something like that???

Yes, I do think the church thing crossed a line that a lot of people won't easily forget. I also think Stern is smart enough to know that stunt wouldn't have been worth the fallout. I think everything he does is calculated and he weighs the risks of what they do on the show before they do it.

In publicChat Icon I think the fact that it was in a house of worship just gave it more outside media attention. Any of the participants for that stunt were/would have been charged with public lewdness (if I remember correctly).

First Amendment..... just becuase he is a jerk does not mean that it does not apply to him too.

I am not a fan but he has a right to express his opinion, JMO.

AND I think that Al Sharpton should be the LAST person going after his job...after alll remember the whole crap with Tawana Brawley.....for some reason this man STILL has legitimacy in the mediaChat Icon

I agree...and don't you love how Al Sharpton only stands up when something bad is said about A-A people. Where was he when Imus was equally bashing everyone else, since he calls himself a civil rights activist?

Possibly. His advertisers pay a premuim to be placed during his stunts though. I think that because he has been around longer & had been fighting for "free speech" for himself for such a long time he attracts advertisers that are willing to put up with his antics. O&A, while having the same type of radio show, were not on as long as Stern, and did not have the same pull with the advertisers. From what I recall they still got the majority of leads from the radio station itself, whereas Stern was the selling point & they would filter the advertisers down into bundles for other shows.

It might be privately owned property, but a house of worship is considered a public place. (I might have to look into that a little further though. I did a case study about this b/c it happened when I was in college studying media....)

Re: Imus Comments on Rutgers/TN Women's Basketball Game

sharpton should be the LAST one judging people...i don't understand why he has any credibility. that man starts more problems than he solves.

imus apologized...that's enough. i may not agree with what he said, but he has freedom to say it. i'm also not of the thought that you should be fired after one incident, especially when he has been on the radio for over 40 years (or so i read)

Imus is an idiot. Never liked him.

But.......
What p____es me off is that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are making a big circus about the whole racist comment. But it was okay for the Rev. Jackson to call NY "hymietown." And what about when the dj's in my avatar made racist comments about Asians. Mr. high and mighty Sharpton kept his big fat mouth shut because the comment wasn't directed to blacks and the dj's were black. He only screams bloody murder when someone white makes a racist comment about blacks.
He is a supposed to be a civil rights activst but only for black people.

Re: Imus Comments on Rutgers/TN Women's Basketball Game

I had been watching CNN at the gym while listening to that channel on the radio through my IPOD.

There was an African American Radio host (whose name escapes me and I apologize) who was being interviewed in regard to this matter.

He had said (and I agree) that Don Imus is way past the "Shock Jock" part of his career and his program runs parallels to that of the morning shows on Free and Cable Network television such as Good Morning America.

The man said that Imus doesnt interview porn stars and social misfits the way Stern and Opie and Anthony do. He interviews federal officials, state and US senators and others in government, possibly heads of state. It is hardly a comparison anymore. In other words, he has a different type of responsibility to his audience and if he wants to be taken more seriously as a broadcaster on matters of great importance, it is best that he stay away from comments such as these.

Will he get fired? Probably not. But some sort of disciplinary action should be taken.

Exactly!!! Although I like Imus, the really interesting thing to watch will be the reactions of the politicians/media people that are Ismus' whores. We'll have to wait and see.

I agree. It is not that they [Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton] do not have a valid point but then refer to yourself in the proper way. Clearly they are A-A rights activists, which is fine. But do not try to come off like you are for ALL equality of ALL people. And the "Hymietown" comment was actually made by JJ during his Presidental campaignChat Icon It amazes me and still shocks me that they continue to have credibility even though they are so slanted and inconsistent.

I think all CR activists need to take a page from the Dr. MLK book & see what it really should be about.

(OK off soap box)

totally agree here - I'm all for free speech, but I'm all for capitalism too and a company needs to make money. If they can make money by keeping Imus - why not? Their business decision. They won't make money from me either way - I never liked him. I actually would love to see some real news on MSNBC in the morning.
