Re: Imus Comments on Rutgers/TN Women's Basketball Game

I've listened to Imus on and off for as long as I can remember -- even back in the WNBC days. They say incredibly stupid and offensive things all the time. The sports guy on the program is usually the most offensive one.

I don't understand how this one thing was identified and magnified.

With or without pay?

Suspended with pay is a joke.

Suspended without pay may hit a little closer to home. But probably not.

The problem I have is really two fold:

1. He didn't think enough about it before he said it to think it may be wrong.

2. It seems like he had to be coaxed into apologizing.

But then again, maybe it took the whole weekend to have the shaman bring his corpse back to life.

I think it was an offensive thing to say,
but I think an apology is acceptable

NBC annouced they will suspend the simulcast of Imus for 2 weeks, but he will still do the radio show, just won't air on MSNBC during his suspension time

*EDIT - Oh I stand corrected - CBS radio just suspended him too

Re: Imus Comments on Rutgers/TN Women's Basketball Game

If anyone has been awake & utilizing any media today I am sure you heard about this. Al Sharpton went onto Imus's show. He again apologized, then things got ugly when Imus used the phrase, "I cannot win with you people." Sharpton flipped about the "you people."

Tons of radio station DJs are STEAMED that Imus got suspended, and that the blatant disregard of First Amendment rights, and the continuing trend toward one-sided repercussions & fining.

So let's re-fuel the fire, shall we? Do you agree that the fines & punishments are one-sided (implying that if it were a person of a minority making a "joke" about a caucasian person there would be no outrage?)

I totally agree with this. While I do think we all need to be sensitive to the issues effecting minorities, what is happening with Don Imus is a blatant attack on the 1st ammendment. His statement was racist and disgusting but he is well within his rights to say it. You don't have to agree but that is the beauty of this country. He should not be fined or suspended. If people really want to make a point about his racist comments, they can boycott his show and stop listening.

There is so much offensive music and language out there about women. How many times are women referred to as hos and *******? Again, people have the right to say/sing/rap what they want, but why aren't people addressing that and boycotting that kind of talk?

Excellent point! So many songs are centered around the "ho's at the club" or that "b!tch"...no one asks for these "artists" to be fired!

Re: Imus Comments on Rutgers/TN Women's Basketball Game

IMO, regardless of who said what about whom, I don't think anyone should be fired for utilizing the First Amendment. *EVERYTHING* that is spoken will offend *someone*. Some days, I'm offended by the phrase "good morning".... I doubt you can find a phrase spoken by anyone that doesn't offend someone. We all love the fact that we have the freedom of speech in the US, but unfortunately, that means that we have to live with the consequences. I don't think what Imus said was good, I think it was dumb of him to say that, I don't believe in what he said, but I have to allow him to speak his mind. I am almost constantly offended by just about everything Al Sharpton says.... he is a very hateful and prejudiced man in my mind.

And, yes, I do think fines/punishments/repercussions do have a double standard involved.....

Re: Imus Comments on Rutgers/TN Women's Basketball Game

Imus apologized properly. He did not apologized for offending people, rather he apologized for what he said. He KNEW what he said was wrong.

HOWEVER to hide behind the First Amendment for this, IMO, would be cowardly. If he knew what he said was wrong, he needs to accept the punishment. You can't just say "OOPS I made a big boo-boo" and expect a hug and a gold star. It is likely that even if he were fired, the man would not suffer, some other company would pick him up and he would start all over again on another channel and somewhere else on the dial.

The reason why people are making such a big deal over this is because his audience IS huge and he DOES have a responsibility to his audience. He needs to take the punishment like a man even if it means his tail is between his legs for a while.

See although I agree with most of what you are saying I don't think that refering to the First Amendment is hiding behind it. People are still angry & claiming he has the right to say things is not hiding behind it for protection from that. Yes, what he said was stupid & could alienate people/listeners/advertisers, which, IMO is worse than offending a non-listener, but he does have the right to express an opinion or thought regardless of what he feels the repercussions are.

Re: Imus Comments on Rutgers/TN Women's Basketball Game

I know I shouldn't be, but I can't believe the 3-ring circus the media has turned this into.

As a woman I am much more offended that he called these women "HOs" than the term "nappy head". My understanding of the term "nappy head" is comparable to saying someone has "kinky hair". It is a physical description. Perhaps it means different things in the A-A community.

I do think that he needed to take responsibility for his actions. Saying sorry isn't always enough - I think the suspension was fair.
