What would you do?

I know this is ultimately a personal decision, but I'm interested in your opinions.

As you may know, DH was recently in the hospital for 5 days.

While there, we must have seen about 40 different nurses.

To put it simply, the nurses SUCKED!!

With the exception of FOUR, they were rude, impersonal, inattentive and in my estimation, incompetent.

This is the same hospital I am scheduled to deliver at in May.

After seeing the way the nurses were with DH, I'm very apprehensive about delivering there.

BUT, the hospital recently did a 7 million dollar revamp to the maternity wing and two friends have delivered there and loved their experiences.

So my question is:

Do I trust that the maternity wing will have different nurses and go with the fact that friends have had great experiences?

Or do I take my experience of this past week and find another hospital?

Can you go to the maternity wing for a visit and meet some of the nurses?

Sorry ur DH had such a horrible experience. Being in the hospital is tough enough you dont really need bad nurses on top of that.

That being said I would say that the nurses in the maternity wing would be different than the nurses your DH had and since your friends had great experiences I would go with that.

Re: What would you do?

the nurses are completely different in the maternity wing. maybe you can take a tour ( i think a lot of hospitals offer these to expecting parents) and check out the nurses.

I agree. Can you stop in and ask for a tour of the wing. I went on a tour of mine and they were super sweet. Made me feel comfortable to deliver there. Chat Icon

Honestly- the difference in the personalities of the nurses varies as much by the unit they're in as they do by the hospital theyre in. The demeanor of a med surg or PACU or ER nurse is going to be significantly different that that of a maternal/post partum/L&D nurse, from my experience- it's almost like a completely different world.

I would still definitely try to find some feedback on the unit and take a tour if possible, but i think comparing the 2 really is like apples and oranges. I'm sorry he had such a negative experience!! Chat Icon

I would go with the experiences of your friends and use that hospital. It's a shame that you and your DH had that experience with the nurses when he was there.

I had a similar experience in LIJ- I had a miserable experience as a regular patient, but my friends who delivered their babies there were all really happy with the maternity ward.

I agree. L&D nurses are a completely different breed straight from heaven. I've found the maternity floor nurses to be completely different from when I had surgery in the same hospital.

Re: What would you do?

Yes, as some of the other ladies said, in my experience the L&D nurses are alot more personal and attentive than other nurses.

Re: What would you do?

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the input.

I was thinking the same thing, that the nurses in maternity have to be more compassionate and a different kind of nurse.

I do plan on taking a tour of L&D at some point.

For now, I guess I'll stick with them.

This is a NJ hospital, so most of you don't have to worry about it. Chat Icon

Re: What would you do?

The maternity wing will have different nurses. Even in the ER there are different nurses for Materniry patients & the L & D nurses were completely different from my experience as well. I think you should try to tour the facility (L&D) & see if you cannot observe & meet the nurses.Chat Icon

I would think that the labor and delivery nurses are different than the ones that were taking care of your husband. That really suxx though. I never understand why nurses are so rude!? Chat Icon Why are you in the profession of trying to make people feel better, but you're attitude would kill someone!

Why dont you take a tour of the maternity ward and see the nurses that are there and develop somewhat of a relationship with them, BEFORE you deliver and ask them questions.

I would stick with the hospital. The maternity wing should be completely different. Good luck!
