Re: This is my opinion only....Disney Obsessions...

I never went to Disney until I was 16! SInce then, I have been there 4 times & I love going but since our last trip, DH & I really enjoyed Islands of Adventure more! It was not so much of the "cartoon's" & disney themed things. It was more of a "Great Adventure" & we love rides.

Even when going to Disney, I just love the idea of riding rides all day & knowing that I am on vacation. We spend time enjoying the hotels also. Of course, you are constantly surrounded by kids but lately I have seen more adults in the parks then kids.

When I do have kids, I will bring them there to see have the entire "Disney" experience but not until they are old enough to appreciate it.

My parents LOATHE Disney and only took my sister and I because my dad had a conference in Orlando. We were 3 and 5 and don't remember anything from it. Apparently my dad was cursing under his breath the entire time.

I never had a desire to go again. We will probably take our child tho because my MIL lives pretty close and we get bored when we go visit her.

LOL. I have a problem with the corporation since they take great childhood stories from all over the world, buy them & then Americanize them. I had this whole arguement with my MIL that Disney did not invent Pooh.Chat Icon

I don't think that's so bad. People I know who truly love Pooh or Mary Poppins have read the books, same for the fairy tales.

I like the disney version better. less gruesome Chat Icon

The problem is, they get all future royalties of the story once they buy it. Not fair if you ask me. In additiion there was a huge controvery over who actually owned the original Pooh bear (the real stuffed bear that Milne's son owned & inspired the books). Um, sorry Disney, not yours. JMO.

Re: This is my opinion only....Disney Obsessions...

I never went to WDW until I was 20. Our family vacations were to the Catskill Game farm, Boston, etc ... anywhere in driving distance. But I never "dreamt about going to Disney" or felt like I was missing something from my childhood.

I went a second time with a friend when we were probably 23 and didn't go again until I met DH (whose brother and SIL are of the certifiable kind of Disney nuts).

Now we do go often and it's pretty much our only vacation destination and our reasons why:

My 6'5", 40 year old husband lights up like a five year old and I love that. I go to the spa and we normally eat at the "best" restaurants when there and we stay conceirge level ever since we upgraded once because again, as our main vacations, I enjoy the extra service and attention. I also enjoy rides.

So don't feel like its an "obsession" for us but a place that is enjoyable and agreeable for both of us.

I last went to Disney when I was 15, which was 22 yrs agoChat Icon
EPCOT had just opened.
I would love to go again and soon. I wanted to go w/ DH this past summer, but we started TTC'ing last fall and I got pg right away after TTC'ing so being in a hot area with lots of running kids while 6 or 7 months pregnant was just not going to happen.Chat Icon
I think it would be fun to go as an adult with no kids because there are many parts of Disney that appeal to adults, not just children. And I would like to go and not have to go on every child's ride with my child, but go and do things that I may not be able to do w/ a child.

That said, I think we'll wait until our son is about 4 or 5 and then take him. I would feel bad going and not taking him just to see Disney for myself again.

And maybe we'd go a few times while he's a child/teen, but I dont' think we'd make it an annual thing. There's other things we'd like to show him too!

I think now all of the stuffed animals are in the NY Public Library.

There are a million versions of, say, snow white and the seven dwarfs out there, Disney was just so good at it that theirs made a lasting impression.

I admire them for that ...but I see what you're saying. I admit they present their watered down version as THE version, but I think they's so damn good at it.

I'm not sure I agree, but lets agree to disagree on this one. Outside this country not everything is Disney like it is here.Chat Icon

I went to Sleeping Beauty's Castle and visited the places the stories were robbed....er, I mean, "acquired" Chat Icon from. these stories were handed down from generation to generation until the Brothers Grimm wrote them down.

they were more gruesome...b/c they were more REAL...and representative of life at the time...

PS Sleeping Beauty and Aladin are two of my fav movies of all time....but the real stores appeal to me on many levels.

I don't get the Disney thing either... I loved it when I was little- loved the movies as a little girl. My parents took me there twice...

But to go so far as to wear the clothing and live that out in my adult life? I don't think so, just not my thing now that I'm an adult.

Ricky has never been, and I feel like he missed out on a part of his childhood...but to go now - NEVER....he doesn't like being around too many children, who walk into his "nuts."

Jake never went either- but like you I went all the time when I was little- after 12 or 14 I was done with it and wanted to go to more island type vacations

Jake doesn't even want to take our kids- I find that to be so sad- but they will go- My Dad is waiting for the day he has grandkids to take!

Re: This is my opinion only....Disney Obsessions...

I knew a guy once-- his wife was so obsessed with Disney that he actually questioned marrying her b/c it got so out of control.

She tried to turn the ENTIRE wedding into a Disney party and it looked like either a 8 year old's birthday or a Bat Mitzvah- So he tried to limit it a little, make it a little less like a "circus" that she was trying to make it into-- and she flipped-- so he ? marrying her.

He went through with it anyway Chat Icon He is NOT happily married by ANY means now... The one thing he asked her, seriously, was to not have characters show up at the wedding-- she had goofy, minnie, mickey and tigger come to the CHURCH and then the hall later on... He was mortifiied... And they hardly spoke on their HM (in Disney of course- she insisited) b/c they were in a huge fight over it b/c she promised him she would not and did it anyway. Where can I find these real stories. I had no idea I could read the real legends of sleeping beauty and aladdin. I think was Pi$$ed me off the most with Disney is how they "wash up" the story of Pochahontas.

imo, there are 2 types of people, those who go to disney and those who don't. there are those over the top disney freaks, and those that go and enjoy themselves for a week or whatever. but, it is an exhausting vacation. you never stop going. so i can get why people don't like it.

I can't agree with you more. I had an ex whose parents were so obsessed it was sickening. They went EVERY year, sometimes more than once. They wore all disney themed clothes, their house was decorated like a 4-year olds bedroom with all disney stuff and the dog was named Minnie.
Now unfortunately every time I think of Disney I think of them.
I told DH we are not going there until we have kids.

Now, I don't want to offend anyone by any means....but I have been seeing more adults obsessed with Disney than children would be.

I grew on Disney, I loved Disney, but now as an adult....I think it's part of my past, but to incorporate it into my life now?

I've never been to Disney, although I would definitely go. My dad went with his girlfriend and her whole family and HATED IT with a burning passion. They DEFINITELY think he's a communist too, and they told him he was a bad father for never taking me. (We used to visit my grandparents in Fl. for weeks at a time in the summer but never made it up there).

we go to disney every year pretty much because DH wants to, and he jsut feel relaxed and completely care free there. Its not like he's running up to hug the crap out of the characters or anything, but its an enjoyable vacation, we love the restaurants, and its a nice 'escape'. And since he works his butt off the whole rest of the year, i'm glad he has that to look forward to.

to be honest though, i really didn't see the point to the question, so i'm just answering blankly. I'm not even a fanatic (especially by comparison) about WDW, but making a generalization like that is just silly. Only children should be excited about Disney is like saying that only Lesbians should enjoy the L word Chat Icon not much logic, IMO.

Bruder Grimm book. 1/18. I have it. you'll get it.

Aladdin is from 1001 Arabian nights...which I don't have....did you know, in the real story...Aladdin is CHINESE, not Arab.

I'd love it!

I'm not disney obsessed, but I certainly love the movies and had a wonderful time with DH at WDW. I also love the muppets, sesame street and fraggle rock and have the DVD collections of these shows. DH loves all of this stuff too, as do many of my friends.

I know it's not for everyone, but there are certainly worse things to be obsessed with.
