Re: Opinions on Sachem SD...
I grew up in Holbrook and went to Sachem. Its not the best but its not the worst either. My sister had to be in Special Ed. classes and my mother had to fight tooth and nail for everything. Otherwise I have no complaints.

Re: Opinions on Sachem SD...
If your child does not have any educational problems or social problems and breezes through, the school district is fine. However, if your child needs help of any kind, be prepared to fight tooth and nail to get it. This district will not lift a finger to help you unless and until you threaten legal consequences. I've been down this road and I know first hand what this district can be like. You have to be well prepared and well educated in the problem at hand to get what you need and, even then, they will try to cheat you out of what your child deserves. My oldest daughter went through without a hitch and got an o.k. education. My youngest had learning disabilities and I had to fight as hard as I could to get what she needed and make sure she didn't fall through the cracks. For the amount of money I spend in school taxes, I expected more from this district and was sadly disappointed. IMO, nowhere near the top as far as school districts are concerned, in either an education capacity or an administrative one.

Re: Opinions on Sachem SD...
Sachem is a good school district, however, it is large which some people dislike. If you are looking out east, try Connectquat, seems a little better. WHy don't you look online and compare district report cards. It's public info!! Good luck!!

I know from personal experience with a special ed child that connetquot has great services. I loved the elementary school, middle school was good but I was slightly disappointed w/the high school.

this is something I've tried to discuss on this board many times to with no success. Not regarding Sachem in particular, just that those school stats give a small view of what really goes on & you never know if you'll have a child that needs special services. This is something we can't choose, many of the "great" districts completely drop the ball when it comes to special ed.

I've met quite a few of people who went to that SD and they all had great things to say about it.

Re: Opinions on Sachem SD...
I went to Sachem and have to say that I had a great experience. I was able to take so many courses that helped prepare me for college. I have heard that many of those great classes that my friends and I took are no longer available due to budgetay cuts. I think that because it is such a large school it has started to suffer a little in terms of what it can offer. They struggle to get their budgets to pass - understandable since they are getting higher and higher. Not sure about the special ed program, my siblings and I did not require them so I can't comment. Overall I loved the schools within the district and had a great experience.

Re: Opinions on Sachem SD...
I think one reason that I would shy away from a big district is that the sense of community is not as strong. Not all kids will make the sports teams and there will be more competition for student government and club offices, etc. I think it may be easy to get lost in a big pond.
HOWEVER, my cousins went through Sachem and both excelled.

I would never go by those reports. JMO.
I heard mixed reviews on Sachem. People I knew that went there said it was way too big and very competitive because it was so large.

Re: Opinions on Sachem SD...
See I went to Smithtown when it was one high school and graduated with 650. Me and DH would perfer a larger school district because from my experience a smaller school district if your child is struggling or not well liked it can be a horrible experience as in a larger school district there are more social clicks and activities. If your kid is not well liked in 1st grade in a smaller district that will continue on throughout their school years being it will always be the same kids, no mixing, no new people, etc. Being there are so many element, middles and now 2 high schools I would still feel a sense of community. I personally find connequot too small. We both love the larger districts (ie Sachem, Levittown, Smithtown, Half Hollow Hills, etc). I know several people who went to small schools like Hauppauge, Connequot & Bayport/Bluepoint that say the social development can be rough in smaller schools. I do hear what your saying about the programs. While Smithtown ranks very high its special ed program is ok, but not as strong as let say Levittown which scores lower.

Re: Opinions on Sachem SD...
I don't think connetquot is small, there are 5 elementary schools & two middle schools. I think there were almost 1000 kids in my son's graduating class in 05. I went to comsewogue & I think we only had 1200 kids in the whole high school...that was a LONG time ago though. ets: I have no personal experience with Sachem, except my friends husband is an ex-assistant superintendent. He always said its like every other school, its good & bad. Now he's in a "great" district that recently had a scandal & he says many of those kids have issues.

According to their files, the 2005-2006 graduating class was only 523 students graduating which is smaller than 1000. Connetquot School Information

I don't think 523 students is a small district at all.

Re: Opinions on Sachem SD...
for LI schools I would consider it medium size. There are plenty of schools on LI in the 600-900 range.

Re: Opinions on Sachem SD...
I went to farmingdale, I had a graduating class of about 500.
I have friends that graduated Islip the same year and they had about 250 - i would say 500 is large - i didnt know everyone - some people at graduation it was the first time i saw them.
I was in nerd classes, so i had the same fellow nerds in my classes every year though.

Re: Opinions on Sachem SD...
I went to Sachem and liked it very much. Since it is big there are plenty of opportunities to do what you want (courses, clubs, sports, etc). I did find that since there are so many students that there was always competition, especially amongst sporting teams. But I liked that I could meet new people everyday!

Kelly is 10000000000000000000% correct on this. If you don't believe it do a search.I am a teacher and posted about me walking out of my 'great' district to prove a point because of the way they were treating my special ed kids. As a teacher I had a real eye opener this year as to how little most will do if not pushed!!!!!!

Kerry-I'm sure you're right if that's what the stats say, I guess it just felt like 1000 kids while we were sitting out under the beating sun at graduation Honestly though as a longtime PTA & SEPTA member & a class mom, I spent a lot of time in those schools & even I didn't know every kid. Its a bigger district than you think, it covers a pretty large geographic area too which makes it harder for all the kids to really know eachother.

Re: Opinions on Sachem SD...
I'm not againist Connequot I just perfer a larger district and graduating myself with over 600 was great. I know for a fact that two of my good friends as well as my DH went to small districts and my DH and another were not very liked from day 1 and being there may only be 300 kids in a grade lets say, its hard to break that rep in a smaller district. I didn't know all 640 kids, but being there was that many it allowed many different groups, clubs, clicks etc to develop.
