Re: Flu Season - Healthy people dying

We get the shot every year without question.
It's not perfect but it's the best thing we have out there. And with two parents who take public transportation to work and 1 kid in school and the other in daycare i take no chances trying our best to prevent the flu.
a study in the journal Pediatrics last year found that 80 percent of kids who die from the flu are not vaccinated... that is enough for me.
You are also less likely to end up in the hospital and have severe flu illness and develop things like pneumonia if you are vaccinated. For all these reasons we get flu shots!

However with all these healthy people dying from fly - that 10 year old CT boy :(...its making me nuts and wondering if I made the right decision.

Thoughts?

I'm not sure if this boy had any preexisting conditions, but he had the flu and his parents still took him for a 7 hr car ride to a hockey tournament. I think besides fluids, the first thing they tell you is rest, rest, rest.

Where did you get that information? I believe he was diagnosed with the flu while he was already at the hockey tournament and died later that weekend after developing pneumonia in addition to the flu. We obviously don’t know anyone’s medical history, but it seems that he was otherwise healthy before contracting the flu.

I don’t know if it’s true that the vaccine can lessen the symptoms, but having had the flu twice, I have no problem getting the shot and hoping that it either protects me and my family from the flu or reduces the symptoms. I’m very nervous having a child in daycare who’s still too young to get the shot, especially since we were just notified that someone in another room at the center tested positive for the flu.

I read an article that said he was sick before they brought him. By the time they were heading home he got much worse and they took him to the hospital.

Does anyone know why doctors would be hesitant to test for the flu? It's not like it costs them anything, I would think they'd actually make money by billing for the test.

When I took DD in for flu-like symptoms they said it was up to me if I wanted to test for the flu since we discussed Tamiflu and both agreed that we wouldn't give it. I passed on the test because I wasn't going to do anything differently if she was positive.

This was the same for us. I took my 5yo to our regular ped and days later when my 3yo got sick I took her to Stat Health and both said no real point in testing bc they wouldn't recommend tamiflu. I have empire which covers most everything so it wasn't an insurance thing.

Two or three years ago I went to Stat health with flu symptoms. They said bc levels had reached epidemic and i had been exposed to a confirmed case the protocol was not to test and to just give me the meds.

I read that he was diagnosed with the flu while in NY. I can’t imagine parents bringing a child who had already been diagnosed with the flu to a hockey tournament.

Right, so they had taken him to the tournament (in Syracuse I think) before he was diagnosed. I think we're agreeing but I'm not sure lol.

I read yesterday that it works like this

You get the flu
You are laying in bed with the flu, all the fluids settle in your chest
You get pneumonia
Penumonia turns into Sepsis (bacteria infection in your body)
Then you die

A counselor at Ward Melville just died last week from the flu. I've read about quite a few kids who were otherwise healthy dying from the flu. Athletic kids who just contracted it, got sepsis and died. Scary stuff.

I also don't understand why doctors aren't testing anyone for it that comes in with a fever right now. Like someone else said, it's not invasive. It's a swab in the nose.

Reading about healthy people dying from flu is a lot different than actually knowing specifically what their health status was. And thats always private. Thats my only argument here.

Yup. A lot of these people have compromised immune systems from issues that may not be public info.

How do you know they have compromised immune system? You wouldn't. You are just assuming.

Flu Season - Healthy people dying

After my daughter almost died from complications from the flu, we give the flu shot. No one should die from the flu or anything flu related.

I only use Stat Health since I have no doctor and yes they test for everything. Same with my DD's ped. But the ped will not prescribe meds for flu due to the side effects in children.

I go to City MD and wait for them to ask me if I'd like to be tested for bubonic plague. You go in there for a broken toe and leave knowing you don't have strep, flu, mono, anthrax poisoning and smallpox.

ETA: but to be clear, YES to flu testing during FLU SEASON. ALL THE YESSES.

We currently have a lawsuit against my daughters former pediatrician for several reasons including them not testing her for the flu.

We all get it every year. The smartest, best educated people that I know believe that it is almost everyone's best bet, and why wouldn't we want to all take our best shot?

Easy decision. I believe in science. I believe in vaccines.

I’m not assuming. My husband went to HS with one of the “healthy people” that passed from the flu. However the news reports never mentioned (and possibly didn’t know) their ongoing medical issues.

So he was NOT healthy in the first place. Back to my original question where is the proof that healthy people are dying from the flu!?

You don’t need proof. Of course healthy people die from
Flu. They rapidly progress to pneumonia, their lungs fill with fluid and that’s the end of it. If your lungs are filled with enough fluid you will die. It doesn’t matter how well anything else works or how strong your immunity is. It can happen quickly, too. Now, most people don’t get to that point. There may be some underlying genetic factors or predispositions that would maybe make one person more likely to be unable to clear the fluid. No one really knows. But the truth is, anyone can die from flu. It’s ignorant to think otherwise.

Flu Season - Healthy people dying

I did second guess not getting a shot when I got the flu a few weeks ago. But that’s my own mistake because I’m terrified of needles. I keep up on updating my vaccines because I travel to countries that do not have vaccines against polio, etc. But that only has to be done every few years.

Next year I’ll get it. I don’t ever want to get the flu again and I’m still suffering from a cough from it.

Of course they can but not at the rates of those who aren't "healthy". The title of this post with the word healthy is what scares people. Of course if it became a plague like 100 years ago that's a different story

Oh ok. I didn't take it that way. I took it as just a concern. I didn't see her mention anything about the rate compared to those that aren't healthy. It is possible and that's her concern.

I took your responses as it couldn't happen and thought that was a big concern. Because it could give healthy people a false sense of thinking "ah I'm healthy it won't happen to me". It is possible. But you're right. Not at the same rate.

Thanks for clarifying.

To answer the OP, I see no negative side effects to giving my kids the vaccine so I'll continue to give it. Maybe if they haf a reaction I'd think twice but they haven't. Some protection is better than none imo.

I agree.

Plus in my experience, when you have the shot it DEFINITELY lessens the symptoms and length. So for that alone with 3 kids and 2 working parents, i'll continue to vaccinate.

My kids got the shot. 7 cases of flu at their daycare this week. 2 of my co-workers with flu. My kids were both sick this week with flu like symptoms but only for a day or two. I wonder if they had flu but the vaccination helped them nor get it as bad. It's so bad this year

Re: Flu Season - Healthy people dying

My kids do not get the shot. Most years they do not get the flu but they have each had it at least once in their lives and I guess it was mild because they felt a lot better within only a couple of days. I am leery of the flu shot not because I think it causes the flu, but because it does temporarily depress your immune system as it is working to make antibodies to fight off the covered flu strains. The ONE time I received the flu shot, a couple of weeks later I got a severe case of pneumonia and thought I was going to die. Yes that is anecdotal but it is my experience.

I think it’s bold to say the shot definitely does anything- particularly lesson symptoms and length.

I’m not anti flu vaccine- my son had the shot the last two years in a row. Last year, despite the shot, he got the flu so bad that the ped sent him to the ER directly from his appointment. He was extremely sick, it was frightening.

Sure, they say the vaccine CAN lessen severity, but it didn’t happen in our case so I can assure you, it’s absolutely not definite.

See this is what I don't get about thr claims of the shot lessening the severity..... if the strain going around...like this year's strain....is not in the shot this year....then you have ZERO protection against that strain...it was not in the shot. So you get THAT strain and it's like you didn't get the shot at all...there was no protection against it in this year"s shot. So how would your symptoms be any less severe kwim?
For the record I DO give my daughter the shot.
Just always wondered about those claims too

Bc your body forms antibodies against multiple parts of the virus.

To simplify, say the vaccine contains the flu virus strain with proteins A, B, C & D. Then the virus mutates and the strain that is circulating and making everybody sick now has proteins A, E, F, & G. You already have some antibodies that will immediately bind, which sets off “the alarm” faster to get the rest of your immune system to respond, so you may get less ill or get better sooner.
