Re: Flu Season - Healthy people dying

I have been second guessing my decision! I hate it. I'm home with my ds all day and we don't go anywhere! But dd is in school and I have been freaking out over it. I wanted to take her out and home school her for a couple weeks! I keep fighting with myself on if I should just take her for the shot but I don't know what the right thing is! We've been taking our vitamins and elderberry though.

Flu Season - Healthy people dying

I read yesterday that it works like this

You get the flu
You are laying in bed with the flu, all the fluids settle in your chest
You get pneumonia
Penumonia turns into Sepsis (bacteria infection in your body)
Then you die

A counselor at Ward Melville just died last week from the flu. I've read about quite a few kids who were otherwise healthy dying from the flu. Athletic kids who just contracted it, got sepsis and died. Scary stuff.

I also don't understand why doctors aren't testing anyone for it that comes in with a fever right now. Like someone else said, it's not invasive. It's a swab in the nose.

I've also read that Vitamin D is a HUGE help in fighting off the flu. At least 5,000 iui a day for adults.

But to be honest, even if you test positive for it, there isn't much they can do. You kind of just need to ride it out and treat the symptoms. So knowing it is definitely flu vs. another flu like virus really doesn't do you much good.

Yea but I would want to know if my child or myself had the flu so we can be quarantined. You should know if you have the flu so you aren’t walking around infecting other people.

I'm so surprised doctors aren't testing. I went to the doctor in July last year and they fought me tooth and nail to do a flu test. JULY. I'm never one to say this, but those bs-ers wanted the $$.

So I am floored that doctors aren't testing in the middle of flu season.

I agree but if you are sick enough to think you might have flu and see a dr, to me that means you should still quarantine yourself and not go to school and work. Flu isn't the only thing that spreads.
One time I had a virus so bad I thought I might die. I had 104 fever. Doc thought it was flu for sure. My swab came back negative. Truth be told I was sicker with that non flu illness than I was when I had actual flu.
So yeah, even though I didn't have the flu ,I needed to be quarantined. And to be honest I had no choice anyway, I was too sick to go anywhere.

Yes but you knew you had a virus, this doctor didn’t test this kid and the mom can think he is ok once the fever breaks and send him to school. Last year I had flu a and b, I went to the doctors because I thought I had a cold - no fever and couldn’t get my asthma under control. She tested for the flu as a precaution and said she didn’t think I had. Guess what I did - not just one but both strains, and everyone was shocked. I would’ve went to work the next day, I was literally going there for the strong cough syrup

So doctors should be testing everyone, regardless I want to know if my child has the flu. I also believe in taking medicine. I’d also be pissed if I had to go back to the doctors for a second time to find out.

Well, because people are dying all over the place from this strain of the flu, I would definitely want to know if that is what we are dealing with. I would be EXTRA vigilant in monitoring mine or my child's symptoms because from what I read, these people dying make a turn for the worse very rapidly.

I know right! No offense to the OP but I find the fact he didn’t test more alarming than not getting the shot.

Re: Flu Season - Healthy people dying

If you have the flu, it's the same as any other bad virus. You know you're sick and you know you shouldn't be walking around infecting people. So, getting tested after showing symptoms is kind of redundant and most doctors won't test you unless you have symptoms. There's no way to avoid infecting other people during the incubation period (because the incubation period is a few days, so by the time you show symptoms and actually get tested, you could have been walking around for days giving it to other people). IDK that's how my family doctor explained it to me.

We don't get the flu shot. If it was more effective I would consider it.

Side note: I don't now how someone can develop symptoms of pneumonia and not think it requires a trip back to the doctor. A painful cough that produces off colored phlegm... it's pretty obvious that shouldn't be ignored.

Idk, a bad cough to me means that you should stay home. The common cold is still a virus, why is that ok to give to other people? It baffles my mind. If you needed strong cough syrup, stay home and don't give that cough to other people.

Nope. Besides the flu there is a nasty non flu virus going around. Dd had it for 5 days. 102 fever for 3 days, throwing up, chills, neck and body hurting. She tested negative for flu and strep and her dr said she has seen a lot of this virus too. 2 Kids in dd’s Class have had it. The flu vaccine is not 100% effective, not even close so I don’t regret my family not getting it. Dd was quarantined this past week and I’m ready for winter to be over.

No because of my asthma a bad cough can linger for two weeks. So no that’s not true. The cough syrup is to surpress it. My son also gets a lingering cough for 3 weeks after he gets sick.

There is really nothing to debate here, as I explained you can get the flu without necessarily having you obvious symptoms - so you should get tested.

Staying home for a cold is unrealistic. I've had a cold for a month. No one can take a month off work for a cold. Also, coughs linger for weeks on end.

Don’t even bother.. it’s just a point to spin what I said around to make it seem like it’s a waste of time to get tested for the flu during flu season. Which I think is one of the most absurd things. Idk maybe my doctors are weird but they always test for flu and strep.

I realize it's not realistic to stay home for an entire month with a slight cough and stuffed (or runny nose), it's still a virus and contagious though. If you stayed home and rested, you might be able to fight it off quicker. If someone is going to the doctor for super strong cough medicine, they should be staying home. I just don't think it's right to give that to other people.

When DS has a cold, I keep him home. Not just because he can give it to other kids, but because his immune system is already fighting that. I don't need him catching something on top of it.

I only use Stat Health since I have no doctor and yes they test for everything. Same with my DD's ped. But the ped will not prescribe meds for flu due to the side effects in children.

Don’t even bother.. it’s just a point to spin what I said around to make it seem like it’s a waste of time to get tested for the flu during flu season. Which I think is one of the most absurd things. Idk maybe my doctors are weird but they always test for flu and strep.

I'm with you!

I know someone who was in the hospital last week. He had pneumonia (not flu related) the hospital was so crowded, they didn't have a room for him for 4 days. He had to stay in the hall. They said it was due to the flu epidemic.

Sorry but drs should be testing everyone at this point.

ETS: As for people staying home when they're sick. It's never going to happen. People need to work. People need to be out for various reasons. It's part of life.

But to be honest, even if you test positive for it, there isn't much they can do. You kind of just need to ride it out and treat the symptoms. So knowing it is definitely flu vs. another flu like virus really doesn't do you much good.
Dh ecen took the Tamiflu when he waa diagnosed 2 years ago and it did nothing

Yea but I would want to know if my child or myself had the flu so we can be quarantined. You should know if you have the flu so you aren’t walking around infecting other people.

Idk, a bad cough to me means that you should stay home. The common cold is still a virus, why is that ok to give to other people? It baffles my mind. If you needed strong cough syrup, stay home and don't give that cough to other people.

Staying home for a cold is unrealistic. I've had a cold for a month. No one can take a month off work for a cold. Also, coughs linger for weeks on end.

Ha, mine too. And I would report any doctor who refused to give me either of those tests at the height of freaking flu season.

Personally, I'd also take tamiflu if I tested positive because I like to live on the edge. So I'd need to know.

I go to City MD and wait for them to ask me if I'd like to be tested for bubonic plague. You go in there for a broken toe and leave knowing you don't have strep, flu, mono, anthrax poisoning and smallpox.

ETA: but to be clear, YES to flu testing during FLU SEASON. ALL THE YESSES.

My dh and I have both been sick with a virus (cold) for the past few weeks. It's realllllly lingering, and has been worse than a typical cold I've had in the past. Dh took a couple days off work, but he can't take any more. And I went to the dr but they didn't test me for anything. Just told me it was a virus and sent me on my way. I actually regretted even bothering to go to the Dr since it didn't help me any and the thought of all the germs i could have picked up while there Chat Icon
