So far, these are the costs:

I stand corrected! Chat Icon But most of those expenses are going to stay the same whether you bring your DC's or not. I guess it comes down to how well behaved they are and if you don't mind being with them on your own for most of the time.

ETA: What about asking BIL if your kids can come to the wedding, even if it's just for a little b/c it seems like it's a late ceremony/reception.

I would do one of two things:

1. just you and DH go on the planned dates and find childcare for your kids for when your mom can't watch them

2. extend the vacation and all go (everyone arrives and leaves at the same time)

It's too much for you to travel with 2 kids by yourself and it's a lot of work to do it just for a couple days (when you factor a whole day of traveling on each end of the trip).

Oh, I wouldn't bring the kids by myself. I would meet DH down alone.

My mom and DH's family (who will be at the wedding) are the only childcare I trust for an overnight so someone else is not an option.

Well, essentially we'd save on 1 flight, car rental (since we probably don't need a car if it's just us - I'd just get a cab or hop in with family), cost of the boys outfits and food/activities which adds up.
And the value of convenience and sanity Chat Icon

We just did FL/Disney for a week with them. We used miles for our flights and stay at IL's timeshare and it still ran us a couple grand for the week for food/activities. We had a great family trip, but there was no doubt it was a lot of work. And we stayed for the full week b/c we felt we need at least that for it to be worth it. Usually takes a night for them to adjust to a new bed and get over the exhaustion of travel.

I recently did almost this, except we drove to the wedding for six or seven hours. It was pricey for us. We took DS who was less than two months old and my mom, which was priceless.

The cost is def. a huge factor, but the biggest thing is managing the kids. Traveling with a newborn is a whole different ballgame then traveling with an 18 month old and 3 yr old. I'm concerned enough about the 3 hour flight followed by 4 hr car ride - that alone could kill us.Chat Icon
And bringing my mom is not an option.

I think I'd probably have DH fly down Thurs night and you fly down Fri after your mom is available (both direct flights since it's such a short time frame) and then come home on Sunday afternoon.

I just did a trip to Key West in Feb for a wedding (due to a snow delay we were there for all of 21hrs!) and it was hectic and crazy enough (almost to the point of being unenjoyable) without Nate. If I had him with me, I might have lost it Chat Icon It would be different if you could make a week out of it but it's just too much for just a weekend and if you cant bring them to the reception anyway (which FTR I still find unbelievable based on your previous post about this), it's probably not worth it...

Re: WWYD - Travel with kids

We had a KW wedding in June.

We flew down early Friday AM. The drive is NOT that bad. I did it all myself. We stayed for 10 days; we rented a house just over the bridge, 10 minutes from Duval St. This made the trip sooo incredibly worth it. Thousands cheaper than a hotel; look into it if you can.

I will be honest, the groom's stepdaughter was around 5 or so, and there wasn't much for her to do. We did snorkeling and went to the pool and the butterfly museum, but it didn't seem super kid-friendly to me, JMO.

Just some other pointers Chat Icon

I did start looking into houses to make it easier, and more afforable (su cks to be on a "romantic" vacation in KW w/ hubbie and 2 kids in the room Chat Icon ) but the bride and groom want us at their hotel.

Re: WWYD - Travel with kids

I would take the kids and lengthen the time down there to make a family vacation out of it. You can't go wrong with Key West! Or you can always do something else in FL.

If it was anyone else, I'd say just send DH alone but it is his brother. I would want to be there with the kids.
