WWYD-Kids and teachers/coaches and....

them telling you that they can't control them and you need to talk to them--over and over and over

My dd has ADHD and on medication. Her meds wear off about 5pm. All her after-school activities are after her meds wear off. One of her teachers have told us over and over that we need to talk to her as she was out of control, distrupting the class.
This one teacher gives the kids candy during the class and sometimes my dd doesn't even have time to have dinner. Of course my dd will not tell her she can't have it but my dh told the teacher straight up and the teacher just looked at him.

It is soooooooooooo hard to try and explain how HARD it is to raise her as they don't have children like that.

Should I explain her situation and try and continue through the year or should I give up and teach her at home?
I am under alot of stress because of this situation every single week she goes.

Can you try sending her with a snack? And the teacher should be reminded not to give her candy- I have had diabetic kids so I know that it can leave you feeling guilty, but her welfare is more important.

Is it possible to adjust the time she takes her meds so that they don't wear off till later? Is she getting any kind of behavior modification therapy?

It sounds rough for both, but I can see a teacher being frustrated that your daughter is acting out. Does the teacher even know that she is diagnosed with ADHD? About her medication?

Can you arrange to have medication available for her to take on days that she will be in school for extra activities? Or does she only take the medication in the morning for the whole day?

DH is a phys ed teacher if you would like me to ask his input.

Not only would I speak to the teacher about the situation; I would speak to the dr. that is prescribing it

is she taking concerta?
If so, is it possible to take half the dosage before school and half at lunch time?

This is done pretty often where I work.

Does she take the time release version?

I have done the snack thing before but it might be a good thing to make sure she does have something before she goes there no matter what.
She can't take her meds any later as she goes to school and they only last 9-11 hours (usually about 9 from our experience of many years being on meds).
Yes, she goes to counseling at school but it is still hard for her to control herself when she is off the meds, too much sugar and with other kids.

I don't think she does know because it never came up in conversation. I think I will have to tell her though.
No, the medication is only once a day, time release that lasts 9-11 hours (mostly 9 hours from our experience).

Her meds are TR but they don't last after dinner time, ever.

Then the first thing I would do is have a chat with the teacher. They can keep it in the back of their head what the deal is and be much better prepared. You can't fault them if they don't know.

Though I'm a bit biased... I think phys ed teachers are pretty awesome.

If you are admitting how hard it is to raise her, then when you add 27 other kids into the mix, then I'm sure you can see where the teacher is coming from frustration wise. I def. try to approach my student with adhd differently and there are days where I need to step out of the room, I am about to cry b/c it is hard. I KNOW when my student is not taking his meds and I know when the dose is too strong. You MUST let the teacher/coach know. From my own experience, knowing has changed how I approach him. You must also let the doctor know. I wish you A LOT of luck!

This is a teacher outside of school who only have a total of 5 students in her class.
I will have to tell her about the ADHD though as her school teacher knows and by all rights she should know.

Re: WWYD-Kids and teachers/coaches and....

Which medicine is she on? DS is on Aderall XR and it only lasts about 8 hours. His doctor said that Vyanese (sp?) gives you true extended release so we might switch to that. We have such a hard time with homework at home I can't even imagine putting him into an after school activity.

Honestly if she isn't getting anything out of it because she is too distracted, I would pull her out of the program and maybe do something on the weekend instead.

Re: WWYD-Kids and teachers/coaches and....

If a parent tells me that their child has ADHD, my entire approach with them changes. I usually speak with the student one on one to come up with some non-verbal signs that we can use between us that will help them know when they're escalating to a point that is out of control. They also know that they can tell me they need to take some space, and leave the room for a quick walk around the hallway if they need to get some energy out. I have other ways I deal with students who have ADHD, but my point is that this teacher doesn't know she has ADHD, so how can she handle it properly.
What you can do as a parent is not only tell her about your daughter's diagnosis, but also educate her on it. Not all teachers are thoroughly prepared to deal with a student with ADHD, so maybe educating her a bit would help. Personally, I love when parents get involved and tell me what has worked for their child in the past. HTH!

Is it possible to give her her medication earlier and send a second dose for her to take at school with the nurse. If a child cannot have candy then the teacher needs to respect that. As a teacher though I can understand how frustrating it can be to have a child that is "out of control" is it also possible for the teacher to give her something like a koosh ball for her to manipulate with her hands so that it might help to busy her a little?

DEFINITELY talk to the teacher & explain.. Perhaps if she understood your DS can't help it, she would be a little more patient.
