All I know is that our total salaries, before taxes together, are UNDER the median so we must be poor too.

Funny, I just had to do a project for one of my courses based on this. Suffolk County Median income is $87,763.00 Nassau is $97,690.
This is from the Census.gov website.

Me too - I wonder if people answered for their total household income - instead of median? Just thinking based on the posts of the tax refunds that the number would be skewed lower...
You're suppose to answer based on your TOTAL household income. I'm assuming the OP wants to know where people fall relative to what the article considers to be a median income.
You're not suppose to answer based on your median, you answer based on your total income and that will give you an idea of what YOUR household brings in relative to what the article considers to be an AVERAGE household income.
Exactly. The poll is wrong and should be redone  I'm not answering since we only have 1 income

correct, good lord, Im at work all day and this is what happens, SORRY! As soon as I just came back on, I was like, that doesnt make any sense. I was thinking median from the article and didnt mean to put it in the subject line. I meant I was trying to DETERMINE the median HH Income relative to the article, not that I wanted you to figure out the median income of your HH, sorry!

the median of any number is the combined number divided by the total. so a two income family will add both incomes and divide by two

OP - were you truly asking for median HHI or asking about total HHI?
She's asking what your household makes relative to what this article says is the median, median is just an average. If the average household brings in $93K........where does YOUR household fall relative to that number. NOT your median, that makes NO sense. If your household brings in $110K you're above the median. So you look at the stats from the poll and you're able to ascertain how many households fall above and below where this article considers the median household income.
It's the median of all people polled, not PER household.

LI has so many people living under that income level.
There is A LOT of wealth on this island. I don't doubt the median HHI here is pushing towards $100K. Of course that still means roughly half of LI'ers are below that median.

When they release stats like what the median incomes are for a given area, they are always considering the total household income.
I don't understand the confusion with this topic. Whenever you're discussing median household incomes it's referring to the TOTAL amount of income being brought into the home whether that be from one person or ten. Unless a stat/survey is specifically calling out an INDIVIDUALS income, a median income stat is always going to be in reference to a households TOTAL incoming income, pre-tax.
ETA - Census stats are based on all the individuals that live within a particular home therefore the stats above are referencing TOTAL HHI on the island. So of all the HOUSEHOLDS polled in Suffolk about 50% of them are bringing in just over $87K before taxes. Nassau is slightly higher.

After reading this whole thing I'm still confused about how we're supposed to answer this.
I picked the choice that represents DH & my combined gross yearly income, before any deductions, NOT the amount we bring home. I hope that's what you meant
