i like the question!

my mother is 49 and works as a receptionist. her hobbies are shopping first and foremost (LOL), cooking, entertaining, and decorating. plus she loves spending time with her family, especially her grandson, and her friends.

Hi!!!! What's her favorite thing to shop for? Mary

My mom cleans houses. Most of her clients have had her for over 20 years. Her hobbies are her grandchildren, bowling league, camping, horror movies and hosting all the family get togethers. She's the oldest of her siblings and loves to take care of everyone.

My stepmom is unemployed but looking for a job. She has worked many different jobs through the years but she loves delivery jobs, being on the road and not in a factory or office. She doesn't have to work anymore but she wants too. She loves to go snowmobiling, NYC, shop (great bargain hunter) and to spend time with her grandchildren.

My mom is 58. She works full time and in my opinion is overworked and underpaid. She's been working for the same company forever. She's practicallly the boss, but not on paper, thus she's there all the time but doesn't get paid any more for all the hours she puts in in one week (and trust me it's way more than 40) and the responsibility and aggravation she deals with. I wish she'd speak up but she's afraid to rock the boat and since my dad died this summer she's just happy she still has work and can pay the mortgage.

On her days off she either comes to visit me and my DS or drives out the island to see my brother and his kids. She very rarely if ever takes time for herself and it drives me nuts. I have to force her to. I just wish she'd take the time to make herself happy. Chat Icon

Hi!!!! Sounds like your Mom and Step-Mom are both very busy, and that you love and admire them both!!!!! I tried cleaning for offices, felt like I did a great job, the bathroom being all nice and clean, until I returned the next week, and it wasn't just dirty, it was filty!!! Course I didn't feel like my work was appreciated, much like when I cleaned our bathroom, as a kid, and my Brothers slopped it up again!!!! Chat Icon Mary

Hi, Alissa!!!!! Awww, hon, I'm so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing!!! And poor Mom!!!! What you've just described with her job, is exactly like our Son!!! He's a manager of a store, and I feel he does a great job, and he's honest, good to his employees, and his Co. doesn't appreciate him!!! He knocks himself out to please his superiors, and it seems that they do as much as they can to nit pick, and keep him from earning bonuses. He trains his employees, and when he finally gets someone he can trust, and who can relieve him, so he gets days off, the Co. took him, to be a Manager elsewhere!!!! So, Son is working so many hours, without a day off!! Co. need to appreciate a valuable employee!!!! Ok, off that soapbox and back to your Mom!!!!Chat Icon I'll be praying about your concern for Mom, Alissa!!!! Chat Icon Mary

He was Amish, and can speak Pa. Dutch,

I find this fascinating, Mary! Since you say he *was* Amish, does that mean he left his family or is he still able to be in touch with them? Or the did the whole family leave that way of life when he was young?

And I think its sweet that you take your mom's socks home to wash them.
There are definitely still things to help with.
My grandfather's things (pajamas, t-shirts, etc) were always getting lost, so my dad would go & take inventory buy new ones at Kmart & take him out when he was up for it & bring him things like choclate bars, that he was able to have, but couldn't really get in the home.

Hi!!! My DH left at his Amish minister Father's request; His Dad did not want DH's new ideas to rub off on a younger Brother. Most of his Family are still Amish; We can see them, but the rules of shunning are in place, but those rules do not really affect us anymore, since we are not invited to weddings/dinners, no doubt because it's time for the nieces/nephews to marry, and they don't really know us. There's a ton of them!!!. Now if someone died, and we attended the funeral, we would not stay for the meal. The issue is we cannot sit at the same table to eat with his Family; In earlier days, they put us at a separate table, along with DH's BIL, who married DH's Sis, who's Old Order Amish, but he is New Order, drives a car, has a telephone in the house. Also, my DH cannot hand his Amish family anything; He has to place it on a table, etc. and they pick it up from there. It's interesting to hear about how things are going for your Grandfather!!! My Mom just told me yesterday that the laundry shrunk a new top I had gotten for her. There seems to be a problem with theft in my Mom's room. She didn't lock up a little cosmetic bag, that she had $7 in, and the $ was stolen!!! Her roommate had a watch and ring stolen. It's pretty pathetic that someone would steal off little old ladies, who don't have much!! Mary

We are 4 kids. She was a SAHM after baby #3. Ran errands or cleaned the house the whole day as far as I can remember. After baby #4, she started all the admin work for my dad business for almost 15 years. Cooked evey meal from scratch, still does. Was a taxi driver for me and my siblings and all our sporting activities, dr appointments, school meetings, etc..

I can really appreciate now what my mom did all those years now that I have ONE kid. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

She was a hard worker. Always was. I wish she would "slow down". I don't think she knows how to now. Years of habits.

ETA: for hobby, my mom sews. She makes doll clothes that she sells on ebay.

My Mom made me doll clothes too, on her Singer Treadle Sewing Machine. I still have the doll clothes. When I became a Mom, I understood what my Mom felt/went through. It's a beautiful love, sacrificial love, that most Moms have for their children!!! Chat Icon Mary

My Mom (whose name is Mary as well!) is 58 years old. She stopped working right around the time that my oldest brother was born (he is going to be 37 in about a month). She was a SAHM. I only moved out a few months ago and my almost 35 year old brother lives with my parents, and I think she still mothers both of us. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

She's had breast cancer since I was 12, (I'll be 25 in a few months), but she is doing very well.

She likes to do crafts, go out to dinner, shop, and clean. She LOVES to clean. She practically begs me to let her clean our house. I tell her that she doesn't have to do that, but she insists so I let her lol.

My Dad is 59 and works as a certified financial planner. He has been at the company since he was 16 years old, and his mother worked at the same place. He loves sports and horse racing.

As I've gotten older, they've started going out more, because I drag them out lol

Jen, I'm so glad your Mom is doing ok!!!! My DH had prostate cancer, and he is doing well also. You know us Moms, we like to Mother; My Mom who's almost 83,still does it to me!!
Chat Icon Are you blessed or what, to have a cleaning lady?!!!!! That's so thoughtful of you to get your Parents out!!!!! Does Dad plan to retire? Chat Icon Mary

I don't think my Dad will retire for a looong time; I asked him recently if he was planning too, and he seemed to imply that he was sticking around there for awhile lol.

I'm glad that your DH is doing well! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes, it's not too shabby having someone come to clean for free....although I do buy her lunch!
